He was always thinking of the next person, generous to a fault, and worked so hard to provide for his family. When he was 8 years old, he decided to sell newspapers on the corner of Delmar and Westgate so that he could relieve some of the financial pressure on his parents. At the age of 15, he got a job as a soda jerk. At the age of 17, he worked downtown at a woman’s shoe store. He never wanted to be a financial burden to his parents.
Sel was drafted into the Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was Honorably Discharged in 1955. After discharge, he went to work for Mutual of Omaha as an insurance agent and was there for over 40 years. After retiring for a few years, he went back to work for Physician Mutual, again as an insurance agent. No matter which company he worked for, he was always earning President’s Club honors.
He met the love of his life, Mimi Slawin Barohn, in 1994. Their first date was going to Shabbat Service at Temple Israel. They celebrated 31 years of marriage on August 13, 2026.
