

Veda (Aphrodite) Martin, 91, passed away from Alzheimer’s on December 3, 2014. Born July 17, 1923 in St. Louis, Mo., Veda was a beloved aunt and godmother and friend to many. She dedicated her life to serving her faith, including as an active member of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church community and lifetime assistant to Father George Mastrantonis. Veda also managed for many years the OLOGOS publishing company, which produced the popular and widely read series of the LOGOS religious pamphlets written by Father Mastrantonis and edited by Veda. In 1979, Veda was honored by the YWCA as one of twelve “Women of Distinction”, receiving a Spotlight Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the St. Louis community. She served as the first woman elected to the St. Nicholas Church Parish Counsel, worked tirelessly on behalf of Church Women United, the Philoptochos Society, and also a served as a Sunday School teacher.
Veda was preceded in death by her father Spero, mother Xanthippe, sister Louise and brothers George and Theodore (Ted). She is survived by her nieces, Deborah Martin Paletta and Pam Martin, and her nephew and Godson, George Martin (Kathy), great-nephews Nicholas, Christopher and Theodore (Ted) Paletta, great-nieces Taylor and Sophia Martin, and her sister-in-law, Alexandra Martin.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 8, 2014 from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 4967 Forest Park Avenue, St. Louis, Mo. 63108 followed immediately by the funeral service. Burial will be held at St. Matthews Cemetery, 4360 Bates Street, St. Louis, Mo. 63116.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Holy Cross Theological Seminary, 50 Goddard Avenue, Brookline, Massachusetts 02445.
