

On February 7, 1943, John Ed Powell and Gradie Estella Hopkins-Powell became the parents of Willa V. Powell. Willa V. was the 3rd daughter/4th child born to this union in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Willa confessed hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Olive Friendship Baptist Church, Guthrie. She was involved in the choir, Sunday school and Baptist Young Peoples Union. Often a delegate to many Church Conventions.
Willa attended Guthrie Public Schools receiving high marks in her studies. She furthered her education at Langston University where she received a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education in 1964. By far, her proudest achievement in learning was earning a Master’s of Secondary Education degree from the University of Missouri - St. Louis in 1976.
Willa began her teaching career at Ferguson-Florissant Public Schools, in St. Louis, Missouri. She taught Home Economics and was a very well respected educator. She communicated the importance of learning the curriculum taught. She concluded her career in education after 35 years. Long after she retired, students would still remember her and say hello.
While at Langston University she met Randolph William Furch. After years of dating in college and after graduation, the two were happily married on August 26, 1964. They moved to St. Louis, Missouri and raised 2 successful sons and celebrated more than 51 years of marriage.
Willa and her husband, Randolph were members of Antioch Baptist Church, St. Louis, Missouri. She was active as she served as an Usher and WMU member and WMU Secretary. In later years, after relocating to St. Charles; Willa and her husband joined Southern Mission Baptist Church.
Willa and Randolph also enjoyed traveling, bowling and antiquing. She always did her best and enjoyed life with her family especially her Granddaughter Alayna.
Willa loved people and enjoyed sending cards for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, and encouragement to those who were sick or bereaved. She demonstrated compassion and patience toward others in all she did.
Willa V. was preceded in death by her parents John and Gradie; sisters, Courtney and Ruby; brothers, Leslie and Donald. Also, from her father’s first marriage: sisters Mary, Vernice, Zelma and a brother, John. She leaves to cherish her memories; 2 sons Randolph William Furch Jr. (Angela) and Reginald Wayne Furch (Susan); one granddaughter, Alayna Nicole Furch; one sister, Patricia Ann Powell; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
