TRIBUTE TO EVE SABOURIN BY BARBARA SABOURIN
Mom had a full-time job taking care of our family, which she loved (the job and the family). She kept busy with her husband, four children and her dogs and cat. She kept a clean house, made sure there was a nutritious meal on the table, and clean clothes for us to wear. Mom made sure she got us kids off to school, to sports practices whether it was hockey, baseball, softball, or soccer. Our uniforms were clean and ready. She would loyally attend our sports competitions, band concerts, and other activities cheering us on from the stands.
Mom made sure we kept the phone line clear after 4:00 because dad would call to let her know what time he would be coming home from work so she could have dinner ready for him.
She was the distributor of discipline. She would often say “wait until your father gets home.” We all knew that meant nothing was going to happen (no slight to our dad – he did not have it in him to do the disciplining).
Mom and Dad always made sure Sundays were family day. During the day we would go bowling, ice skating or to dads sporting goods store to clean. Sometimes we would go for a ride in dad’s car and drive along the arch river front and downtown. We would go to Luigi’s pizza or Dohacks or the Forum cafeteria for dinner.
She took care of her parents, our grandma Helen and grandpa Frank. Grandma did not drive and lived downtown on Grand Avenue. Mom would pick her up, take her to buy a carton of camel cigarettes and a chocolate shake at Velvet Freeze for grandpa, then visit him at Jefferson Barracks National Hospital.
She loved going to Ted Drews after dinner. Dad would not let us eat in his car; he was so afraid we might spill something on the car seats.
Mom made sure we were always together for the holidays and seen to it we went to church on Saturday evening or Sunday mornings at Most Precious Blood.
Mom enjoyed her grandchildren Vincent and Shane, Gabriel, Elizabeth, William, Hana and Amal and her great grandchildren Soren and Rosie. She loved her favorite (and only) son-in-law, Chuck Burton.
She loved to read People magazine, Readers Digest, the Post Dispatch, and books, mostly history and crime dramas. She would often cut out articles from the newspaper, underline things in red and then mail them to us.
We miss our mom. She built the foundation on which we stand.
