Alice McCloskey Immel passed away June 5, 2024, two weeks shy of her 90th birthday after a miraculous seventeen-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in Philadelphia, PA on June 19, 1934, the second daughter of Simon and Anna (Murray) McCloskey. Her sister, Nancy (McCloskey) Devlin, whom Alice adored, preceded her in death. Alice is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 65 years, Calvin Immel, her children Lauren Immel of Denver, CO; Charles (Leslie) Immel of St. Pete Beach, FL; Wendy (Kevin) Myers of Scottsdale, AZ; Karen (Dalzell Williams) of Hampton, NH; Kelly Immel of Breckenridge, CO; her five beloved grandsons Connor Immel of Boston, MA; Alexander (Katie) Immel, of San Diego, CA; Jeffrey Immel of Chicago, IL; Michael Myers and Luke Myers both of Scottsdale, AZ, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
Alice graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in Philadelphia in 1952 and joined TWA as an international sales and travel agent, a position she loved, especially for the global travel opportunities. She married Calvin Immel in October 1958, and they lived in Chestnut Hill, PA until their transfer to Minneapolis, MN in 1961. In 1967, Cal's career took him to Columbus, Ohio, where they moved with their five children and lived for 24 years. They raised their children in Worthington, OH, a wonderful community with great schools, where they made lifelong friends, attended many 4th of July parades, swim team events, and tennis matches--easily adopting Ohio as their favorite state and becoming forever Buckeye fans.
Alice was very active with the PTA and instrumental in persuading the Worthington School District to adopt some of the best textbooks which the children had been exposed to in Edina, MN, with its advanced school system. When her husband took early retirement in 1991, they moved to Naples, FL surrounded by many friends, both old and new. Those 24 years on Vanderbilt Beach provided an abundance of joy from boating, golf, tennis, numerous social outings, and wonderful visits from their children and grandchildren who loved the beach. In 2015, they moved north to St. Petersburg, FL to a retirement community and to be closer to family.
Alice was an avid tennis player favoring doubles team tennis for years at Worthington Hills Country Club in Worthington, OH and winning several club championships. In Naples, she adopted golf as her favorite sport at Audubon Country Club. While in Naples, she joined Premier Properties as a real estate agent and thoroughly enjoyed the relationships of her co-workers and clients. Alice and Cal both loved to travel and went on many epic adventures around the world. For over ten years, she volunteered as a tutor for the children at the Saldivar Camp School in Bonita Springs and was awarded "Volunteer of the Year" by the school. She also volunteered as a teacher's assistant at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church where she was a long-time parishioner.
Alice was known for her boisterous laugh, which she belted out frequently. She could take a short story and embellish it with vigor until your sides ached from laughing. She was always surrounded by friends, many of them lifelong from her days at Mount St. Joe’s. She loved to travel and planned yearly excursions to places all over the world. She was always interested in what you had to say and years later could circle back around to things that you discussed in that conversation. Alice was also a stunning, tall brunette with steel blue eyes who always loved shopping and the latest fashion. She was proud of her Irish heritage where she is from “Donegal, where you eat potatoes skin and all!” She had a giant heart and cherished her children and her five “handsome grandsons”. The boys loved when she fixed her “Granny Eggs”--scrambled eggs with a ketchup smiley face. The boys loved to make her laugh, which she did so with contagious enthusiasm.
Alice lived a very long and beautiful life, especially these last few years, because of the tender loving care Cal gave to her. He calls her the love of his life, his one-in-a-million, his princess, his bride, and was often caught giving her little love taps on her bottom as she walked. She felt loved and adored by him and her family. Her greatest gift in her last days was the love she expressed in her eyes as she paused and looked at each one of her children and lingering the longest into her husband’s loving eyes.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday July 13 at 11:30 AM at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 445 82nd Ave, St Pete Beach, FL 33706.
