Anne Orr (age 86) passed peacefully on May 16 surrounded by family and friends at her home in St. Petersburg, FL after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Anne was born in Southall, Middlesex, England. She attended the Bishopshalt School and then Wall Hall Women’s Teachers’ Training College where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education. She moved to the United States in 1962 and proudly became a United States citizen in 1976. Mrs. Orr taught elementary school at The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, PA, where she went on to serve as the Director of the Lower School from 1976 until her retirement in 1996. She also served as the Interim Head of The Goshen Friends School in 1999. Anne served as a member and President of the Pennsylvania Association of Private Academic Schools (PAPAS) and was dedicated to the advancement of education. She was an active member of the Daughters of the British Empire, the Women’s Club of Tierra Verde, and numerous other charitable, volunteer, and social organizations.
Fondly known as Annie, Mrs. Orr, Lady Anne, the Rock, Mummy, and Grandma, Anne was loved by many for her quick wit, her humorous banter, her calm in any storm, her thoughtfulness and generosity, and her strength and character as a person. She was a positive role model to thousands of young women, a mentor and leader in the educational community, a personal inspiration to family and friends, and a kind, loving, and adored Mom.
Mrs. Orr was preceded in death in 1999 by her husband of 35 years, George W. Orr of Haverford, PA. She is survived by her daughter Carolyn Orr of St. Petersburg, FL, her son Christopher (Charlotte) Orr of Parrish, FL, five nieces, three nephews, and her three grand dogs, Clancy, Max, and Piper.
A Celebration of Life gathering of family and friends will be held at 5:00 pm, Saturday, May 19th at the family home (4320 48th Avenue South, St. Petersburg, FL 33711). In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to Suncoast Hospice (www.suncoasthospice.org), Best Friends Animal Society (www.bestfriends.org), or As Good as Gold - Golden Retriever Rescue of Illinois (www.asgoodasgold.org).
