

CARVALHO, Elizabeth M. “Betty” 87, of St. Pete Beach, quietly passed to God Nov.5, 2016 at Brookdale-Lakewood Nursing Facility in Lakewood, CO. Born in Portugal, Betty immigrated to Elizabeth, NJ, with her parents, Luiz and Amelia Marage, she supported them and lovingly cared for them throughout their lives. Betty worked at Proctor & Gamble, Port Ivory, NY and Sears Roebuck and Co. for many years. She worked at Catholic Services of the Newark Archdiocese helping the needy, volunteered her time with the Sisters of Charity, and worked to build a church to promote community and social awareness with Our Lady of Fatima Church, Elizabeth, NJ. She also raised funds to acquire land and construct a new Portuguese Instructive Social Club, and she was a member of the Portuguese American Citizens in Elizabeth, NJ. Betty moved to St. Pete Beach in 1989 from Clark, NJ. Locally, she retired from Sears, was a member of The Cathedral of St. Jude, and the Portuguese American Suncoast Association. She was married to the love of her life for 53 years, Antonio, passed to God in August 2007. She is survived by two sons, Joseph of Conifer, CO and Antonio of Old Bridge, NJ. She is also survived by two grandchildren; and her niece, Rose Mary Botelho. Visitation hours will be Monday, Nov. 14, 2-5 pm, at Beach Memorial Chapel, 301 Corey Ave., St Pete Beach, FL (727) 360-5577. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Nov. 15, 9:30 am, at the Cathedral of St Jude the Apostle, 5815 5th Ave. N., St Petersburg.
