Ernst Ludwig Schwegel age 87, of Treasure Island, Florida passed away peacefully on August 2, 2022. Ernst was born November 10, 1934 to the late Ernst Schwegel and Teresa Moser Schwegel in Schrollbach, Germany. In addition to his wife Birgit, Ernst is survived by his children Denise Makowski and Tania Sales, and his grandchildren Brandon, Cayla, Brett and Camryn Makowski.
He grew up in the Weinsheim area of Germany. He immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1954 and then came to Manhattan, NY in 1958. Soon after, he was drafted into the US Army and served his country, stationed in Germany. While there, he met his wife Birgit and they were married in Berlin, Germany in 1964. Birgit and Ernst then moved to Detroit, MI where they had their two daughters. In 1979, Ernst and his family moved to Treasure Island, Florida where they purchased the Molloy Gulf Motel, which they ran together for over 40 years.
Ernst made many connections with guests and friends from all over the world, who continually comment that he made them feel like family. He loved his grandchildren and his “grand dog,” Maisy. He loved learning and spoke several foreign languages and the challenge of repairing almost anything. Dad/Opi was always there to lend a helping hand and share his dry wit and humor.
A visitation for Ernst will be held Thursday, August 11, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Beach Memorial Chapel, 301 Corey Avenue, St. Pete Beach, Florida 33706. A funeral mass is being held on Friday, August 12, 2022 at 11:00 AM at St. John Vianney, 445 82nd Ave, St. Pete Beach, Florida 33706. A burial will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery 5740 49th St N, St Petersburg, FL 33709. A reception will follow the burial, August 12, 2022 at 2:30 PM Captiva Cay Condominium Clubhouse 9357 Blind Pass Rd, St. Pete Beach, FL, 33706.
