I met Joanne when I was a student at St. Agnes High School in College Point.  I was 17 and at a point where my path could have taken the wrong turn.  Joanne inspired me to study and went out on a limb and in order to interest me in what she had to say, she challenged me in a game of handball.  My academic life took a turn after Joanne became a part of my life!  I will always be grateful for the time she took to help me.  Joanne was a loving, kind soul.  She will never be forgotten.  Rest easy my friend.  I know our paths will cross again one day.  

I met Joanne through mutual friends approximately 10 years ago. We became instant friends and stayed in touch over the years. Joanne was a kind, compassionate, intelligent, fun-loving person and I will always cherish our visits whether it was in  NJ, Orlando, St Pete Beach or Costa Rica which was just 3 years ago! I am heartbroken at her passing. My condolences to her family and everyone who's hearts she touched. Godspeed.

May God and all angels welcome her beautiful soul in Heaven. We loved her very much!

Condolences, Joanne Avella may you rest in peace. You will always be remembered in my heart as an amazing, intelligent, funny, empathetic, the list goes on and on.  You and I successfully listed and sold "that house that wouldn't sell"..I was Blessed to have you as my real estate partner. Whatever you did, you gave it your all including your fight for life. God speed my friend!

Just thinking of Joanne conjures up the sound of roaring laughter.  She could name that tune and sing along with me at work. I loved her nickname for me...B ditty. She cherished her family and friends and was  kind, smart, joyous, and will be missed.

I've already written two pieces on Facebook to share with the students we both taught at St. Agnes
I tried to describe the special moments of both fun & interaction we shared at the shore, in upstate New York, and in St. Pete this past winter,  So unsettling that that all has had come to this sad end.
I only received the news yesterday morning.  I did share it with former colleagues as we gathered for our monthly lunch yesterday afternoon. With a bit more notice I would've liked to join you today for the service.  Know that I am with you in spirit as you find your way through this difficult period.
I will make a donation to Suncoast Hospice and to the Ocean Conservancy in her memory.

Hi Cugina. It is I.  My dearest Cousin, sister, best friend... We spent a lifetime talking about everything except when this day would come.  My heart is shattered; forever broken. I guess I will have to use the memories we shared; and I will need each and every single one of them, to glue the pieces of my heart together.  Love you. Love you more. Love you forever.

Joanne and I worked together in Vernon Township a few years back.  She was the Math Supervisor and I was the LA/English Supervisor.  It was a pleasure to work with her and she always reminded me there was more to life than working -  something that was brought home watching the wonderful video of her life.  She enjoyed people and saw the best in them - what a wonderful quality . . .


She will be missed by us here in Vernon...

I only got to know Joanne for a short time, but it was incredibly easy to connect with her and fall in love with her.  My heartfelt condolences to all her family and friends for your enormous loss. She was a true gem. Love and comfort to you all.

I have a lot of wonderful memories of Joanne. Some great parties at the Jersey shore. She used to get me up early to go to the gym. She was an early bird and I am not. She was always available to help her family and friends. I am so sorry she is gone but she is in a much better place and still with us in spirit!


My deepest condolences to the Avella family....I had Miss Avella as my math teacher at St Agnes...she was my all time favorite teacher!!  She was funny, friendly, a friend and most of all an awesome teacher!! She made it fun to come to class!! I'm so sad to hear of her passing at such a young age!! May she rest in peace & find peace!!! 

Remembering times with Joanne makes me smile. Trips down the shore, sharing stories about her boat and love of the water and the yummy BBQ in her last home here in New Jersey.  The best laughs were on road trips with cousin Sue and sharing catholic school stories!! Joanne sang a mean Dominique in French!! Great fun with a fantastic lady.   An honor to have called you friend.

From the moment I met Joanne, I knew that she was one of the good people. We often joked about us being in different tribes- she as the the administrator and me as the lowly peon. However, Joanne's  sense of humor, her intellect and her positive spirit embodied the best of humanity. I consider myself blessed that our paths crossed and that I was fortunate to call her my friend. Although Joanne is now with the angels in heaven, she surely was an angel among  us as well! Joanne was my mathematics supervisor at Vernon Township high school. She was working under tough conditions. Despite all ,she assisted me in being able to travel to Georgia for my sons graduation when I was declined by the higher administration... she fought for me to be allowed to go. My deepest sympathies to her family at this difficult time.

Joanne was a brilliant woman. She followed her dreams. I see her smiling face in front of me. We could laugh till we plotzed. Joannes Yiddish vocabulary. I contributed many words to it. She was very spiritual. Joanne was a tough cookie. She could argue up a storm. She loved her Matzo Brie.  He loved her too. We are both heart broken.  Our favorite times when we visited was watching Grace and Frankie. RIP my dear friend.  You put up a good fight

I've known Joanne since she was 12 years old. Her mom and I worked in the bakery together in Whitestone. Joanne and I went to the same high school . We became very good friends for the rest of the 50 years that I've known her. Even though we did not keep in touch all of the time, when we saw each other it was just like we just saw each other yesterday. I will miss her contagious laugh and her  great sense of humor, her strong spirit. I will always hold her close to my heart.

Joanne, I'll never forget your wit and sense of humor. You made me laugh so many times that it still comes up in conversation. You were so loved and touched so many lives. May you rest in peace.

Joanne and I became friends before I was a person...lol. She always teased me that I wasn't a real person until I turned 30! I have so many amazing memories with her; she was absolutly -one of a kind. Her strength,  kindness and encouragement will be missed. I know she is at peace and sharing that infectious laugh she had with everyone
in heaven!💜

So many fond memories of this woman I'm proud to call friend.  Joanne was indeed one of a kind , generous, open and just outright genuine the real McCoy.  I will miss our political discourses..and visits down memory lane..but I am sure about this one thing God remained the center of her being and I'm encouraged that she is resting peacefully in the comfort of His arms.
Our shared birthdays(Nov. 22nd) was that sentiment that always kept us  bonded....Rest in peace Jo knowing you were loved and cherished by those you touched. 

When my father died, my mother was sick, and I was a very young man alone and struggling in this world, my Aunt Joanne gave me her old station wagon and helped convince me how important an education was.  She didn't just show me love and support, she gave me love and support. My Aunt Joanne's love and support became the pillars of my strength as an adult today, and I would have never climbed as high or gone as far without her.  I am positive she touched others in the same capacity. She was a strong and passionate person in the best ways.  She will always be loved, always be missed, and always hold a special place in my heart. I know that she is in heaven rejoined with my father, and while I don't exactly look forward to reuniting with all of my family lost, I take comfort in knowing I will see them again.

I met Joanne when we were both guests at a resort in the Bahamas in 2009. We both learned how to sail a Sunfish sailboat together. It was a lot of fun. Joanne was a great sailing partner. I always remember that experience with fondness. 

Joanne, you were so full of life.  Whenever we visited you, you provided hours of laughs and fun for Rory, myself, and our children who loved you unconditionally.  You were the sister-in-law we always wanted and loved.  May you now rest in peace.

Joanne was my first boss out of college. I learned so much from her, she was amazing. I loved her and I will never forget her.
