Lorraine was born to the late Harry M. and Marguerite (nee Mills) Brown on February 23, 1930. She was preceded in death by her brother, Harry R. Brown (Joan), who was born December 15, 1921. Lorraine had a great love of the arts beginning with her early ballet lessons, drawing, and appreciation of art in many forms. Lorraine attended Marycrest college and then taught kindergarten at a local Catholic school. In 1953, Lorraine met and married her husband, Joseph, who preceded her in death, January 23, 2010.
Lorraine and Joe started their family in Chicago, Illinois and in November 1957, they moved to LaGrange, Illinois. Their first real home went from a small two-bedroom, one-bath home to a much needed four-bedroom, two bath home with room to grow as a family. When the youngest reached middle school, Lorraine decided to enter the workplace; as an advertising salesperson for the local newspaper, The Citizen; as the manager of an import shop; as a marketing assistant for a local bank, Edgewood Bank, becoming their eventual Marketing Director which eventually led her to the Yacht & Tennis Club of St. Pete Beach. After a few vacations with some of the family to the area, Joe and Lorraine saw YTC as their future retirement home. On April 1, 1985, they set forth for St. Pete Beach and never looked back.
Lorraine wasn’t ready for retirement, so she found herself as a Marketing executive with KPMG loving the downtown St. Petersburg vibe. She cruised with her lady friends and eventually with her husband to her beloved Italy. She became involved at the YTC starting a newsletter, Closeups, was elected to the board of her building, The Constellation, and eventually became the president of both The Constellation Association and the YTC Club Association Boards for a total of 25+years. Lorraine was insistent that reserves be maintained, that the grounds be kept up, that the pool area be inviting; in other words, she took great pride in her home and her part in preserving its beauty as well as its value.
Not satisfied with just having a voice at the YTC, she went on to become St. Pete Beach Commissioner of District 1 at the young age of 81. She had been one of the founding members of SOLV (Save our Little Village) political action committee to develop a comprehensive plan that would serve the long-term future of the city. Lorraine was a member of the St. John Vianney parish community, worked with the North Beach Civic Association and Corey Avenue Business Association. She loved St. Pete Beach. In late 2024, she decided to expand her horizons and moved to independent living at Lake Seminole Square. To be sure, her first activity was to join a food service committee! While our mom missed her YTC water view, she was lucky to have a penthouse, corner unit view of Lake Seminole and its boat dock.
While we will miss Lorraine, she certainly had an active life with diverse interests. She will be remembered for her walks along Corey Avenue to check on the businesses, her walks along the beach at Pass-a-Grille with her best friend, Irene; her history of the property, and for us, her children, her motherly love. We celebrate her life and the example she set for all of us.
Lorraine is survived by her children, Karen (Jim) Strykowski, Laura, Joe (Sue) Huhn, James, Donna, and John (Melissa) Huhn; grandchildren Ken Huhn, Kristen Huhn, Evan Huhn, Makena Huhn, Jennifer (Jason) Sinclair, David (Jackie) Strykowski, and Kathleen (Matthew) Kuntzman; and her great-grandchildren: Niko, Ari, Logan, Lili, Natalie, Allie, Troy, Alina, Liam, Adalyn, and Archie.
A memorial Mass will be held Saturday November 15, 2025 12noon at St John Vianney Catholic Church.
Lorraine had a special passion for the work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude would be appreciated. Thank you.
