May 5, 1961 – August 28, 2025
In the early morning hours of August 28th, Michael Kevin Greene, lovingly known as Mikey to those who knew him best, left this Earthly realm. Born on May 5, 1961, in Jackson, Mississippi, Mike most recently called Gulfport, Florida, home.
Mike’s life was full of passion, joy, and resilience. He faced chronic health challenges with a stubborn, determined spirit, fighting right up until the very end. He lived life to the beat of his own drum—literally and figuratively. Mike loved drumming, fishing, jazz, reggae, the Grateful Dead, cheering on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and especially sharing and talking about food with anyone who would listen.
Though ten years older than his youngest sibling, Mike always made sure they felt close—whether that meant sitting down to play dolls as a child or making time for a laugh as adults. That was Michael: holding onto joy in his own unique way and overflowing with heart.
Distance and time sometimes kept him apart from family, yet in recent years, Mike reconnected with his most cherished loved ones, finding healing and closeness that will always bring peace. Even living in another state, and perhaps feeling isolated at times, Mike was never truly alone. His dear friend Henry William Katz was a constant presence, offering love, support, and laughter through life’s challenges—something our family will always treasure.
Mike is preceded in death by his father, Robert Greene. He is survived by his beloved mother, Betty Greene, and siblings Molly, Donna, and Kyle. Our hearts are especially with Mama, who now faces the unimaginable loss of her child. May she find comfort knowing Michael left this world deeply loved and cherished.
Rest easy, Michael. Your life mattered, your spirit was unforgettable, and your laugh, your stubborn streak, and your big heart will never be forgotten. Though he could be delightfully challenging at times, it was an honor to share in his fight, his joy, and his life.
A celebration of Michael’s life will be held at a later time. Details will be shared when arrangements are finalized. Friends and family are encouraged to honor him in their own way—whether by playing a favorite Grateful Dead song, cooking a meal to share, or simply pausing to appreciate life’s small joys, just as Mike always tried to do.
One of Michael’s mantras was this:
“Standing in the light, I will never step back into the darkness. One Love. Oh, I got this, don’t you worry.”
