Betty Ann Wilson

“Nothing beats a failure but a try.”

Betty Ann Wilson, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, nurse, woman of faith, and friend, peacefully completed her earthly journey on Thursday, August 13, 2026. Her life was one marked by extraordinary strength, unwavering faith, service to others, laughter, and a tenacity that remained with her until the very end.

Her Beginning

Betty was born and raised in Opelousas, Louisiana, the daughter of the late Willie Mae Miniex and Harry Tyler Sr. It was there that the foundation was laid for the strong, determined, hardworking woman she would become.

Betty attended J.S. Clark High School, where she was a proud member of the Class of 1966. Following high school, she continued her education at T.H. Harris Technical College, where her desire to care for others led her to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

A Calling to Care for Others

For Betty, nursing was far more than a profession—it was a calling.

She devoted an incredible 37 years of her life to nursing, spending 15 years at Sugar Land Healthcare Center. Throughout her career, Betty cared for countless individuals and families, giving to others during times when they needed compassion, dignity, and care the most.

Perhaps one of the greatest demonstrations of Betty’s strength came during the later years of her career. Even while undergoing dialysis, she continued to work full-time as a nurse.

She cared for others while receiving care herself.

She continued showing up.

She continued serving.

She continued pressing forward.

Betty refused to allow the difficulties she faced to determine what she was capable of accomplishing. Her strength and work ethic were remarkable, and after 37 years of service, she retired from the nursing profession in June 2025.

Her perseverance was the embodiment of the words she often shared with her family:

“Nothing beats a failure but a try.”

It was more than something Betty said. It became a lesson she passed down to her children and family—a reminder that failure can never defeat the person who is willing to get up and try.

Today, those words remain a part of her legacy and a saying her family continues to live by.

A Woman of Faith

Betty was a follower of Christ who remained faithful to God and His works throughout her life.

Her faith sustained her through life’s blessings as well as its trials. Through sickness, dialysis, long days, difficult seasons, and circumstances that would have caused many to give up, Betty continued moving forward.

As the final chapter of her earthly life unfolded, Betty was surrounded by love and covered in prayer. Her family finds peace in knowing that during those sacred final moments, prayers of repentance, forgiveness, and salvation were spoken with and over her.

Her family now finds comfort in the promise of God’s Word:

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

2 Timothy 4:7

Those words beautifully describe Betty’s journey.

She fought.

She endured.

She remained faithful.

And she finished her course.

The Betty We Will Always Remember

Betty’s strength was undeniable, but strength was only one part of what made her unforgettable.

Betty knew how to make people laugh.

She was often the comic relief in the room, armed with quick wit and perfectly timed responses that could have everyone laughing until tears filled their eyes. She had a way of saying things that only “BETTY” could say. Even things I had to threaten to put a muzzle on her. Especially in public.. I told her she learned to whisper in a helicopter. Lord help lol. IYKYK

And those who knew her really well also knew that Betty came equipped with a sharp tongue.

She was witty, honest, outspoken, and never afraid to let you know exactly what was on her mind. Whether she had you laughing uncontrollably or sitting quietly after one of her famously direct responses, an encounter with Betty was rarely forgotten.

She also loved music. Gospel music held a special place in her heart, and James Brown was her favorite artist.

But if you really wanted to find the way to Betty’s heart, there was another answer:

Take her to the casino!

Betty loved going to the casino, and those trips became treasured memories filled with excitement, laughter, and time spent together.

These are the moments her family will carry with them—the music, the laughter, the casino trips, the witty remarks, the unmistakable sharp tongue, and all the little things that made Betty simply Betty.

Her Greatest Legacy — Her Family

Of all the roles Betty held throughout her lifetime, one of her greatest blessings was being a mother.

Betty was the proud mother of five children:

Natasha LaToya Jolivette-Pratt (Sam) of Houston, Texas;

James Edwin Wilson (Shaila) of Opelousas, Louisiana;

Monica Yvette Otis of Picayune, Mississippi;

Roshawnda Wilson of Lafayette, Louisiana; and

Aneisha Wilson of Lafayette, Louisiana.

Her legacy continued through her beloved grandchildren:

Dylan Jolivette, Conner Jolivette, Macy Jolivette, Keondrea Wilson, Jamesha Wilson, Jaliyah Wilson, Braylon Brown, Karson Wilson, Kaison Wilson, Karter Wilson, Madison Brown, Venice Blocker, and Theo Shinard.

Betty was further blessed with her great-grandchild:

Cheyenne Oakley, Ramani Mitchell and Jay’lee Levi.

She also leaves to cherish her memory her sisters:

Laura Kaye Campbell (Donnie) and Evelyn Gwen Miniex;

and her brothers:

Rev. Larry W. Thomas, Pastor; Carl Edward Miniex; Blake Miniex (Shanna); Willie Ray Miniex (Lisa); Rev. Tyronne Tyler (Melissa); and Raphael James Tyler.

Betty also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, former coworkers, patients, and others who were blessed to know and love her.

Those Who Went Before Her

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Mae Miniex and Harry Tyler Sr.; her brothers, Ward Ellis Miniex and Harry Joseph Tyler Jr.; and her sister, Joyce Marie Hicks.

Though her family mourns the physical absence of Betty, they find comfort in their faith and in the hope of a joyful reunion with those who went home before her.

A Special Expression of Gratitude

During the later years of Betty’s life, she was blessed with a healthcare team that did far more than simply provide medical treatment. They cared for her, encouraged her, and loved her dearly.

Betty’s family would like to express its deepest and most heartfelt appreciation to those who gave their very best while caring for her throughout her journey.

How do you summarize a woman like Betty Ann Wilson?

You remember her 37 years of caring for others as a nurse.

You remember a woman undergoing dialysis who still put on her uniform and went to work full-time to care for somebody else.

You remember her faith.

You remember the Gospel music.

You remember James Brown.

You remember those casino trips.

You remember the laughter.

You remember that quick wit.

And, yes, you remember that sharp tongue too.

But above all, you remember her strength.

Betty faced life with a level of strength and tenacity that left an example for everyone who came behind her. She demonstrated that difficult circumstances did not have to steal your determination, your faith, your humor, or your ability to keep moving forward.

Her physical presence may no longer be with us, but what she poured into her family remains.

Her strength lives on in her children.

Her lessons live on in her grandchildren.

Her legacy will be carried into future generations.

Her laughter will live in the stories her family tells.

Her faith will remain an example.

And whenever life becomes difficult, her family will hear Betty’s familiar words:

“Nothing beats a failure but a try.”

So we will try.

We will keep going.

We will remain strong.

And we will carry forward the legacy of the woman who showed us how.

Betty Ann Wilson was loved deeply, will be missed immeasurably, and will never be forgotten.

Rest peacefully, Betty.

Mother. Grandmother. Great-Grandmother. Sister. Nurse. Woman of God.

You fought a good fight.

You finished your course.

You kept the faith.

And your legacy lives on.
