Carmen Hernandez, 90, died July 25, 2026, at her son’s home in Sugar Land from complications of pancreatic cancer. She was born in San Antonio on August 27, 1935, to Hortensia Villa (1908–1982) and Francisco “Kiko” Fernandez (1906–1985). She graduated from Little Flower School in San Antonio in 1951 and later attended the University of the Incarnate Word. Four years later, on May 22, 1955, she married Carlos Hernandez Jr. in San Antonio. The couple lived in Corpus Christi and Laredo before moving to Houston in 1967. From 1972 to 1980, she worked at Power Distributors and later held bookkeeping and accounting roles until her retirement in 2007. In retirement, she volunteered at Reining Strength Therapeutic Horsemanship and St. Theresa’s Catholic School in Sugar Land until June 2026. Throughout her life, she championed the rights of disabled citizens and actively supported community and Christian charities as a volunteer, board member, and civic leader. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlos Hernandez Jr. (2017), and her son, David Hernandez (2024). She is survived by her brother, Frank Fernandez Jr. (spouse Margie Fernandez); her sons, Carlos Hernandez (spouse Carmen M. Hernandez), Frank Hernandez (spouse Geneva R. Hernandez), Phillip Hernandez (spouse Jamie O. Hernandez), and Thomas Hernandez (spouse Margaret B. Hernandez); 11 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at five o’clock in the evening on Monday, August 3, at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home, 12555 S. Kirkwood Road in Stafford, with a rosary beginning at six-thirty o’clock.
A funeral Mass will be held at eleven o’clock in the morning on Tuesday, August 4, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 705 St. Theresa Blvd. in Sugar Land. Ladies are asked to wear pearls and red lipstick in Carmen’s memory. Interment will be at South Park Cemetery in Pearland.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Theresa Catholic School in Sugar Land and Reining Strength Therapeutic Horsemanship in Richmond.
