resident of the Atria Sugar Land for almost 3 years, having moved there from Bryan,
Texas where she was a sales clerk for Sears from 1979 to 2005. Doris and her family
moved from Oklahoma to Bryan in 1967. Doris & Eugene C. Fisher lived in various cities
& towns in Oklahoma from 1945 until their move to Bryan in 1967. Her husband, Gene,
passed away in 1978.
Doris was born January 10, 1925 as Phoebe Cobb, in Isleworth, Middlesex, England,
where she grew up with her 4 sisters. Despite her given name, her sisters always called
her Doris. At the age of eleven, Doris gained a scholarship by passing an exam for entry
to Spring Grove Grammar school, as it was only open to children who'd reached a
certain academic level (only approximately 20% of 11-year-olds passed the exam to go
to a grammar school). While she attended grammar school she sang in the choir at All
Saints. (The church was first mentioned in the Doomsday Book in 659 AD, although
was probably rebuilt several times, including in 1706.)
In 1942, Doris joined the British Military to become a radar operator, serving until 1945.
She received 2 medals of honor during her service. During her service she was
stationed in Brussels, Belgium where she met Eugene C. Fisher of Guthrie, Oklahoma.
They were married in 1945, after which she traveled to Guthrie by boat and train to join
Gene.
Doris & Gene had 6 children from 1947 to 1955. Doris was a wonderful mother ahead of
her times. In addition to being a full time Mom, she worked part time as a high school
library clerk while in Oklahoma City. After moving to Bryan, she continued to work
various sales jobs until joining Sears.
Doris started showing signs of Parkinson's Disease over 10 years ago. In spite of her
progressive disability she tried very hard to keep her body and mind active. While living
in Bryan she was very active in the local Parkinson's Disease organization and an active
member of St. Joseph Hospital Wellness Program. She was a spry little lady that will be
missed by all.
She is survived by her six children: Trudy Cleveland and husband Dan of
Houston,Texas; John Fisher of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Susan Clarke of Cape Girardeau,
Missouri; Paul Fisher and wife Carol-lee of Bastrop, Texas; Michael Fisher and wife
Sherry Hinton of Claxton, Tennessee; and Janet Fisher of Sugar Land, Texas. She is
also survived by 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Her niece, Janie Hampton
along with her husband, Robin, of Camberley, England were special and considered as
part of the immediate family.
A Memorial Celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, June 22, 2013, Earthman Southwest Chapel, 12555 South Kirkwood, Stafford.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to any of the Parkinson's Disease
organizations.
