Dorothy Brooks was born to Jay W. and Mary Lois Arledge in Crockett, Texas on August 13, 1935. “Dottie” was the eldest of three children and loved growing up in Crockett. She was a strong woman of faith who also considered herself a dreamer. She enjoyed reading, art, acting and music, including playing the piano and organ. Dorothy passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on October 12, 2018 in Sugar Land after a brief hospital stay due to a stroke.
In 1953 Dorothy graduated from Crockett High School and married her high school sweetheart, Joey Brooks. She and Joey moved to Houston in 1954 and on to Sugar Land in 1972. During her working career, Dorothy served in several administrative positions and retired from the Fort Bend Independent School District. Joey and Dorothy loved to travel and were fortunate enough to take several cruises in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and in Alaska.
She is survived by her oldest son, Scott and his wife Connie, her youngest son, Chris and his wife Jean and her daughter-in-law, Trish Brooks. Other survivors include her sister, Jaynelle Ragsdill and her husband Tom and her brother, James Lee Arledge and his wife Carolyn. Dorothy was blessed with six grandchildren (Ashley, Kevin, Kristen, Travis, Mathew and Alex) and three great grandchildren (Bradyn, Luke and Lily) all of whom she loved dearly.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Jay W. and Mary Lois Arledge, her loving husband, Joey Brooks, and her middle son, James Keith Brooks.
A memorial celebration will be held on October 27, 2018 at 11:00 am at Sugar Creek Baptist Church in Sugar Land, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Second Mile Mission Center (secondmile.org) or the American Heart Association (donatenow.heart.org).
