Herman served in the Swiss Military Tank Division. He was a member of the Texas Chef’s Association, lifetime member of the NRA, and he won the National Gold Medal-Wedding Cake Competition in Miami and Chicago.
Herman attended Swiss public school until the age of 15. He then entered into a confection apprenticeship for three years and worked 3 to 4 years in Switzerland. At the age of 22, he was employed by the Hilton Hotel Franchise and went to the Caribbean. Herman spent time working in 5 star hotels in Costa Rica, Cuba, Panama, ABC Islands, and others before moving to Dallas, Texas. In 1964, Herman moved from Dallas to Houston and was the Pastry Chef for the Warwick Hotel for 10 years before going to the Petroleum Club in Houston for the next 15 years. Herman met Peter Hobi at the Petroleum Club in 1983. In 1989 Herman and Peter decided to move to Steamboat Springs, Colorado and open a Restaurant/Bakery on their own. Their establishment Alpenrose was a success, but they missed Houston and eventually returned and began working at the Westin Galleria. Finally, on November 14, 1994, Herman and Peter opened the doors of Alphorn Bakery. Alphorn is currently one of the premier teaching bakeries in the Houston area. Many of Herman and Peter’s employees that have been trained while in their employment go on to work for other bakeries in the Houston market.
