Born on September 16, 1930 in Santol, La Union, Philippines, he was the son of the late Leon Opena and Juana Opena.
He was preceded in death by his beloved first wife of over fifty years, Rosita Opena, with whom he built a beautiful life and raised his children: Josephine Siaotong (and Enrique Siaotong), Jenny Opena, (Lita Yaranon),Romulo Opena (and Annalisa Opena), Juanita Ricasio (and Tirso Ricasio), and Joy Yates (and Patrick Yates). Through this wonderful foundation, Jamie was blessed with eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Jamie is survived by his second wife, Rebecca Amorsolo with whom he shared more than ten years of marriage, and were deeply beloved members of their community.
A man of immense honor and patriotism, Jamie proudly served in the Philippine Army, dedicating 30 years of service and rising to Master Sergeant. A proud Korean War Veteran, his diligence and legendary driving skills made him the trusted driver for high-ranking military officials. His service also included a station in Japan for several years, which sparked a lifelong love of Japanese culture and sushi.
After retiring from the military, Jamie immigrated to the United States to build a new future. He worked relentlessly to successfully bring his entire family to the U.S, and built them a beautiful home back in Manila. Later in life, he gracefully transitioned into becoming the devoted caregiver for Rosita during her illness.
Jamie’s greatest joy was being a family man, dedicating himself fully to supporting his children and grandchildren. Alongside his family, his other great love was driving, and he proudly maintained his skills behind the wheel until the age of 93. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience, profound love, and an enduring foundation for generations to come.
A memorial service celebrating the extraordinary life of Jamie Opena was held on Friday, May 22, 2026 at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home in Stafford, Texas.
He was buried with his wife Rosita at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to all who joined them in honoring his memory.
