Jean Olivia Olson, 62, passed away too soon on November 14, 2023. Born in Denver, Colorado on December 10, 1960, to parents Gerald Gerhart Olson and Bobbie Jean Cooley Olson, Jean and her family lived briefly in San Tome, Venezuela and Mora, Louisiana before settling in Houston, Texas when Jean was 4 years old. Jean graduated from Sharpstown High School in 1979 and attained her Masters of Business Administration from University of Houston several years later.
Jean is survived by her mother, Bobbie Olson, of Houston, and her two brothers: Jon Michael Olson, of Houston, and Andy Olson and his wife, Susan Cinque, of Elgin, Texas. Jean is also survived by her nephews Matthew Olson and his wife Emily, of Elgin, Kyle Olson and his wife Joycelyn Jurado, of Austin, and her niece, Jamie Olson and her husband, Jason Elliott, of Bastrop, Texas. She is loved and missed by her great nieces and nephews: Virginia Sue, Margaret, A.J. and Joaquin Olson. Jean also leaves behind aunts and an uncle, numerous cousins on both sides of her family, and a multitude of friends.
Jean was a pro at managing financial assets, and after a career at AIM Management, she retired early -opting to spend her time enjoying her life rather than amassing more money. She was an athlete; an avid golfer since high school and a recreational softball player for many years. She was also a fan of her Houston teams: the U of H Cougars, the Astros, the Rockets, and especially the Texans, who she supported with season tickets for many seasons. Jean was also a Master Gardener, preferring to landscape her own yard with native plants. She traveled widely – across the United States, on an Alaskan cruise, and internationally to London, and Italy, with a notable trip to Cuba in 2016. She was a volunteer with the Bellaire Optimist Club for many years, and on organizing committees for Sharpstown High School reunions.
But most of all, Jean was a people person. She bought her WWII-era house in Bellaire in 1993, and became a fixture on Lula Street for the next 30+ years. Jean loved a party, and helped organize many a block party, providing the homemade ice cream. All of the kids on Lula knew Jean and her black lab – Jean was a Lula legend to two generations of kids. Flooded out three times, most tragically by Hurricane Harvey in 2017, Jean always found a way to rebuild because she never wanted to live anywhere else.
Jean Olson will always be remembered for her great sense of humor, her smile, and her loving heart.
A celebration of life for Jean will be held Saturday, December 2, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home, 12555 South Kirkwood, Stafford, TX 77477.
