Joel experienced much of his life in his hometown of Houston, Texas.
As a teenager Joel lived in Hot Springs, Arkansas and spent one year of life in Denver, Colorado.
Joel had a big heart, a creative mind, and a wonderful sense of humor. He combined these qualities and shared many joyful moments in the community as Straws the Clown. Joel was always willing to put on a show and make people smile. His ability to entertain brought a sense of comfort to those around him.
Joel’s passion was entertainment. As a member of the Cheerful Clown Alley, he became an award-winning balloon sculptor and mentored many in their own journey to pursue their passion of becoming a clown.
Those closest to him praise his skill in music, his ability to make others laugh, and his curiosity, which would often lead to a wave of the finger from his mother and a good story to tell.
Joel will be missed dearly as an entertainer, father, friend, and companion.
Joel is survived by his daughter, Amanda Leigh Steves; grandson, James Steves; granddaughter, Blair Steves; and his brother, Paul Rubert. He is preceded in death by his father, Joe Rubert; and his mother, Eleanor Rubert.
