

Lamberta (Bertie) Trevino Vargas, 80, of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on March 20, 2025. She was born in New Gulf, Texas, on June 3, 1944, to Ygnacio Sauseda and Hilaria Trevino. Bertie leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to her family and friends. She was an active member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
She graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in 1963. Bertie met the love of her life, Pedro Vargas, while picking up groceries at Pacini's Superette. They were married on August 17, 1963. They made their home in the historic community of Denver Harbor and later moved to Southwest Houston. Bertie went on to have a long career with Southwestern Bell until she had to retire due to health issues.
Bertie embraced life with passion, living life to the fullest. She loved spending time with family and friends. She had a profound impact on those who knew and loved her, and she never met a stranger. She made friends everywhere she went. One of the hobbies she loved, when she was younger, was cake decorating. She made beautiful cakes for family and friends. She was best known for her cooking (always trying new recipes) and baking cookies. Family and friends always looked forward to the massive amounts of cookies she baked every Holiday season, making sure to pass them out to everyone. She enjoyed taking trips with her family. She loved celebrating holidays. Everyone looked forward to the huge Easter celebrations each year at her home and gathering every Summer, in her backyard, to enjoy swimming. When she wasn’t ill, she could be found spending time with family and friends or carting her sisters around to the store, Church, and doctor appointments.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Pedro Vargas, her children, Elizabeth Vargas and fiancé, Richard Castleberry, Peter Vargas and wife, Debra Vargas and Tiffany Denton. Grandchildren: Adrian, Joel, Erin, PJ, Jason, Seth, and Dash; seven great-grandchildren; Sisters, Pearl Coronado and Hortencia Barelas, along with many nieces and nephews.
Bertie was preceded in death by her parents, Ygnacio and Hilaria; her siblings, Beatrice Quintero, Rudolph Sauseda, Robert Sauseda, and her twin, Paul Sauseda.
Bertie had a great sense of humor. Her generous heart touched everyone she met. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
Friends are invited to visitation with the family on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home at 12555 S. Kirkwood, Stafford, TX. Visitation hours are 4:00-8:00 pm, with a Rosary at 7:00 pm. A Catholic Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 10, 2025, 10:30-11:30 am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church located at 10330 Hillcroft St., Houston, TX, followed by a reception at the Parish Hall. The Rite of Committal, via an escort cortege, will be held at 2:15 pm at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX.
