Born on July 7, 1946, in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies, Lorna was the cherished daughter of the late Fredrick Smith and Lucinda Robinson. In 1967, she migrated to New York, where she lived for thirteen years before settling in Houston, Texas, in 1980.
Lorna lived a vibrant life filled with diverse talents, creativity, and faith. Over the years, she built a dynamic career that spanned several fields, including working for many years as a banker. A gifted seamstress, Lorna brought joy to countless lives by crafting custom wedding gowns, prom dresses, and tailored garments. Her creative spirit also fueled her entrepreneurial ventures: she designed beautiful custom banners for churches and collaborated with her husband to craft detailed replicas of the Ark of the Covenant.
A devout servant of God, Lorna was an ordained minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the founder of Work the Word Ministry. She possessed a rare spiritual gift for listening and discerning the speaking of the Holy Spirit, offering profound wisdom, guidance, and comfort in her everyday conversations. Beyond her ministry and professional life, Lorna loved engaging with her community; she and her husband were dedicated members of the Houston Missouri City Dominio Club, sharing many joyful moments and friendly competitions with close friends.
Lorna’s legacy of love, faith, and devotion lives on through her surviving family: her devoted husband, Donald J. Durant; her cherished daughter, Maxine V. Green; her beloved grandchildren, Samuel E. Brown and Isaac T. Green; her loving sister, Audrey D. Jones, and brother-in-law, Kenneth A. Jones; her niece, Paula Jones; and her nephew, Kenneth Jones II, her niece-in-law Michelle Jones.
Lorna will be deeply missed by her family, her congregation, and all who had the privilege of knowing her warm spirit and listening heart.
