Mr. Louis “Babe” Smith Sr., was the oldest of eight children born to the late Jesse Smith and Willie Mae Dupre Smith on December 7, 1935 in Houston, Texas. At an early age he professed his faith in Jesus Christ and joined Damascus Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a dedicated member.
He attended Harper School until 9th grade and Booker T Washington High school. He started working at an early age with a paper route and then moved on to Henke & Pillot Groceries (now known as Krogers). Mr. Smith was the first Black cashier for this chain in the Houston area. Mr. Smith joined the military branch of the Army and served during the Korean War as a Military Policeman. After his service/deployment for his country, he returned home and began his career with the US Postal Service as a letter carrier. He loved baseball and was a member of a Negro Fast Pitch softball team named Hilsher’s Home Supply as a catcher. He loved all Houston Sports Teams. He retired from the Postal Service in 1992 and attempted retirement which was short lived. Louis loved gardening and his red roses however that wasn’t enough to keep him away from the work force and he went back to work for Krogers Groceries where he remained until his last retirement in 2010.
He was united in holy matrimony to Mrs. Eddie Jewel Bryant in 1961 but later divorced. He then met and married Bobbie Lois Wilson in 1966 whom he remained in matrimony until his untimely death. “Babe” was the proud father of six children,
Louis will be missed dearly by his wife Bobbie Lois Smith of 52 yrs., six children, Gayla Mitchell, Cynthia Pearson (preceded in death), Michael Wilson, Louis Smith Jr. (Shedrol), Kevin Jerome, and Kalen Muldrow (Derrick), by his siblings, Narvel Lee Stewart, Joe M Smith, Thomas R Smith, Willie E. Smith, Leonard D. Smith (Preceded in death), Curtis J. Smith, Earnest L. Smith. He also had 2 older siblings Jesse Smith Jr. (Preceded in death) and Eloise Smither. Louis also had 22 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
