December 2, 1946 – June 25, 2018
Marioara Hamza Ouvreloeil (Mary) passed away after a protracted illness on June 25, 2018, in Missouri City, Texas. She was born in Liesti, in the Galati region of Romania on December 2, 1946 to the late Marin and Profira (Lupoaie) Hamza. She grew up in the Galati region and became a degreed horticulturalist. As such, she was hired to carry out beautification projects for the Galati railroad company. Mary worked there for ten years, overseeing the raising of flowers and other plants, designing the landscaping, and managing the crew that implemented her designs at the railroad’s various stations. In 1976 she married and moved to Houston, where she spent several years working to expand her career in horticulture. She ultimately established her own interior landscape design business, with clients that included professional real estate developers in commercial buildings located throughout the Houston area, including NASA, the airport, and the Houston Arena. Mary became one of the founding members of the first Romanian Orthodox church in Houston. She was active in the church for many years and worked to help newcomers feel at home. She also worked for Berlitz to translate for Romanian immigrants in legal proceedings. Additionally, she enjoyed caring for her plants, dancing, and music, especially attending her children’s orchestral concerts. It must be said that her proudest lifetime accomplishment was her two children, Catherine and Marc; she was a devoted and loving mother to them both. She is survived by her two children, Catherine Ouvreloeil (Tarik Dahbi) of Belgium, and Marc Ouvreloeil (Susan), of Houston; her brother, Stefan Hamza (Natalia), of Houston; her brother-in-law, Teofan Gagos, of Romania; and six nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her two sisters: Sita Gagos, wife of Teofan; Ileana Dragomir, and her husband Mihai Dragomir. Flowers may be sent to Earthman Southwest Funeral Home on behalf of Mary’s family.
