MARK EDWIN GLAESER
May 14, 1932 – March 16, 2015
Mark Edwin Glaeser was born on May 14, 1932 to Edwin and Martha Glaeser in Little Falls, Minnesota. He had two older siblings, both of whom predeceased him in death. His early years were spent on a dairy farm in the small community of Swanville, Minnesota where he helped with the milking, growing crops and delivering milk with his father in the winter in a horse drawn sleigh. When Mark was 14, his father became ill and the family moved back to Chaska, Minnesota where the extended family was located. He spent his high school years living with his mother and demonstrating his athletic abilities, his high school basketball team advanced to state finals.
After attending college for two years he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After basic training and specialized training he was sent to Tokyo, Japan. The orders for his deployment were lost so he was placed in the Army hospital in Tokyo where he spent his entire enlistment as an orderly in an orthopedic ward. He returned to Minnesota and again enrolled in college. There he met his wife, Nancy, and in 1958 they married and moved to Houston, Texas where he attended the University of Houston in the College of Pharmacy.
After graduation he worked as a pharmacist at Methodist, the V. A. hospital and as chief of the Memorial Hospital pharmacy department. The remainder of his career was spent in retail pharmacy, primarily at the Heights Professional Building and also at Yale Pharmacy. Mark and Nancy resided in southwest Houston where they raised two children, Steven Mark Glaeser and Mary Beth Glaeser Carson. As well as time with his family he enjoyed hunting, both duck and deer, fishing, playing golf, and working with his hands.
Both Mark and Nancy retired in 1967, purchased a travel trailer and began to spend several months a year traveling. They went north every summer to visit friends and family, spent time working as campground hosts in state parks and for three summers worked as volunteers with the Lutheran church helping to construct two church sanctuaries and a parochial school. The past few years have been spent living year round in Houston, during which time Mark built a long planned workshop in the back yard.
Mark was baptized and confirmed as a member of the Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod and remained a faithful member all his life. Both he and Nancy spent many years singing in the choir, most recently as members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mark’s memory to the Trinity Organ Repair Fund, Trinity Lutheran Church, 800 Houston Ave., Houston, TX 77007 -7710.
Blessed with a wry sense of humor, an out-going giving spirit and the ability to make friends with all he encountered in his walk through life; Mark will be forever missed and remembered. He leaves behind those who rejoice that he has entered Eternal Peace with his Lord: his wife, Nancy; his daughter, Mary Beth; his son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Sherry; his grandchildren, Billy, Michael, Katie, Emily and Abbey; and four great grandchildren.
