After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy, and served during the Vietnam War from 1965 through 1969 aboard the U.S.S. Stoddard (DD-566) and on a Swift boat in the rivers of Vietnam, for which he received the Combat Action Ribbon. He was a life member of VFW Post 5619. Randy was an avid enthusiast of classic cars and model railroading, and an extreme fan of drag racing. He was loved by many.
Preceded in death by his parents, Alois and Claire Nickl, his son David Scott (Scotty) Nickl, his beloved aunt and uncle, Glennon and Anita Howland, he is survived by his wife of thirty-two years, Marcia NIckl, his son Rand David Jr., his daughter Katherine (Katie), his step-daughter Rachel Fojtik and husband Larry, his sister Nancy Nickl, his favorite cousin Priscilla Tillman and husband Jesse, his niece Carrie Callahan and husband Kevin, and several grandchildren and great nieces and nephews, with whom he loved spending time.
