He lived most of his young adult life in North Carolina and Virginia. He enlisted in the US Navy and served six years aboard the USS Bigelow. After moving his young family to Texas in 1968, he decided Texas was where he would stay. He married Iva Marie Dillon in Fort Worth, Texas on July 3, 1978 and so began their blended family.
Ray worked for several companies during his career, but retired after 20 years of service from St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston where he worked as a carpenter in the Facilities Department. He loved his work along with his yard and garden; particularly his tomatoes – his greatest passion. He would do anything for anybody and frequently you would see him head off with a couple of bags of tomatoes for his co-workers, friends and family. One particularly cold winter in Houston, he went around to the neighbor’s homes to repair their broken pipes. That’s the kind of man he was; one with a great heart. Ray will be greatly missed by those he left behind, but they know by their faith they will reunite one day.
He is preceded in death by his father, Henry Raymond Disher and his mother, Alice Haseltine Disher, one sister, Loretta Turner all of North Carolina, and his first wife, Nancy Disher of Houston, Texas.
Surviving him are his wife of 37 years, Iva Marie Disher, and his four children; Beverly Bickley, Bryan Disher, Frank Disher and Blake Disher. He was blessed with 8 grandchildren, Angelique, Carmen, Kent, Kasey, Trey, Brady, Jackson and Hannah; and 2 great-grandchildren, Foster & Parker. He loved them all and was so very proud of them. He is survived by 2 sisters, Geraldine Aldridge of Virginia and Phyllis Everett of North Carolina and 2 brothers, Jack Disher of Virginia and David Disher of North Carolina.
