She was born in Valdosta, GA on August 9, 1924, daughter of the late Willie and Mattie Johnson. She was a graduate of Dasher High School in Valdosta and later attended Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. At an early age she professed her faith in Jesus Christ and was a life-long, faithful member of the Church of Christ. She liked to say that “she was born into the church” because her mother was also a faithful member.
On August 8, 1941, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Emmett Mobley. They were blessed with four wonderful children: Emily, Miriam, Robert, and Madeline. Their union lasted for 57 years until his death on October 18, 1998.
Ruth’s life revolved around family and church. She was devoted to her husband and children. She was an advocate of strong loving families and very frequently prayed for such. Her life was a model of her advocacy.
Her involvement in the church began at the West Adair Church of Christ in Valdosta and continued after moving to Detroit at the Cameron Avenue and Joseph Campau Churches of Christ. For many years she led the church’s a cappella chorus. She had a beautiful soprano voice and was joined by her baritone husband. They made beautiful music together and were known around the Detroit area for their singing. After moving to suburban Detroit, they became members of the Holford Street Church of Christ. She was known for her work with the children and women ministries. Following her husband’s death, she moved to Illinois and became active with the South Holland Church of Christ. The subsequent move to Texas brought her to the First Colony Church of Christ where she enjoyed mentoring the younger women to the joys of faith and family.
Ruth had an impact on the lives of everyone she met. She was known for her wise counsel and expressions of encouragement. Countless men and women around the world knew her as “Mom”.
She will be missed and her beautiful life will forever be cherished by her children: Emily Mobley-Royston (William) of Missouri City, TX; Miriam Mobley Smith of Orland Park, IL; Robert Mobley (Dawn) of Springfield, VA; Madeline Mobley-Bresalier (Robert) of Missouri City, TX; grandchildren, Colin, Kyle, and Quinn Smith; Nicole and Chandler Mobley; Benjamin Bresalier; great-grandchildren, Cameron and Miles Smith; nephews, Calvin and James Emanuel of Frankford, KY; great nieces and nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends.
