Native Houstonian, Ruth Keegan Valdez, passed away Tuesday, June 4. Ruth graduated from St. Agnes Academy and Dominican College and received a Master of Library Science from Sam Houston State University. HISD employed her for many years as a Spanish teacher, fourth grade teacher and librarian. Ruth enjoyed a lifelong love of literature and politics. She was a staunch Republican and devout Roman Catholic. Ruth could more than hold her own against the best debaters on any of her favorite topics. She was a storyteller in the best Irish tradition. In later life, she loved nothing more than the company of her grandchildren. Ruth is pre-deceased by her husband Richard Valdez. She is survived by her children, Mary Ellen Kana and husband Mark, Beth Toner and husband Steve, Andy Valdez, and Katy Myrick and husband John. She is also survived by her sisters May, Kathleen and Frances and by her brother Ed and his wife Kathy and by grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
