Shelton Eugene “Gene” Mangum Jr., age 83, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 30, 2025, at his home in Sugar Land surrounded by people he loved. He was born on July 25, 1941, in Kerrville, Texas. He was the first born to his parents Shelton E. Mangum Sr. and Jewel Mae Mangum and graduated from Tivy High School, excelling academically and president of his graduating class. He graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
Gene’s accomplished career spanned numerous organizations, including serving in the National Guard, The Texas Highway Department, Roy Jorgensen Associates in Maryland, Turner Collie and Braden Associates in Houston, Synercom Technologies of Sugar Land, C.W. Beilfuss Associates of Chicago, and Bentley Systems in Houston. His work left a lasting impact in the fields of infrastructure and technology.
Beyond his professional life, Gene was a devoted member of the Railroad Museum of Rosenberg, where he shared his deep love for trains and transportation history. He was a published author of numerous model railroad articles featured in Cowcatcher magazine, inspiring fellow enthusiasts with his knowledge and storytelling.
A man of deep faith, Gene was devoted member of St. Laurence Catholic Church, where he served in the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program for five years, guiding others on their spiritual journeys.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Nephew David Mangum and Brother-in-Law Roy Fuselier. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Rita Mangum; his brother Joe David (Hooty) Mangum and his wife Debbye, sister Deborah Harrover and her husband Al and Doris Mikolas; his children, Tim Weyand and his wife Karen and Michelle Guerra and her husband Luis; his grandchildren, Zachary Weyand and wife Kelly, and Bridget Weyand, his great-grandchildren, Kennedy Turner, and Jackson Weyand. As well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Gene will be remembered for his thoughtfulness, generous heart, unwavering faith, witty humor, and lifelong commitment to the people and passions he loved most. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the memories he leaves behind.
Family and friends are invited to honor Gene’s life on Friday, July 11, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 3100 Sweetwater Blvd, Sugar Land, Texas 77479.
