Verna Eaglin-Blue was born Verna Lee Harrison, on March 31, 1949, to Johnnie V. Harrison, Sr. and Elma Lee Calip-Mosley in Houston, Texas. The oldest daughter of two hard-working parents, Verna learned the importance of purposeful work and the benefits of having an entrepreneurial spirit at a young age.
While she was a teenager, Verna visited Liberty Road Church of God. She fell in love with the warmth of her newfound Church home, gave her life to the Lord, and she was devoted to the ministry of Liberty Road for many years, raising her children with her example of faith in action through service.
Verna graduated from Jack Yates High School in 1967, and soon thereafter, she attended Bay Ridge Christian College, where she made lifelong friends with some of the most Spirit-filled faith-driven people she had ever met. She always talked about her days at Bay Ridge with fondness, and her time at this Christ-centered institution helped ground her in her walk with God. She left BRCC after earning an Associate's degree, and eventually earned a Bachelor's Degree from Texas Southern University.
She married John C. Eaglin, Sr., on June 4, 1971, after dating him for years, throughout his deployment in the Army, and they were inseparable for 37 years (until his passing in June of 2008). Together they raised 4 children, John Eaglin, Jr. (51), Carl Matthew "Matt" (49), Adrian (48), and Rebecca (42). For decades, Verna faithfully attended Liberty Road Church of God, serving as a staple in the choir for many years. She loved music - especially gospel music, singing, attending church, and relaxing with family.
On September 12, 2013, Verna married James Edward Blue, of Mississippi. The two enjoyed traveling, going on adventures together, and attending church services at United Covenant of Hope Church of God. In her later years, Verna had a heart attack and three strokes, and this left her in poor health for the remainder of her days. James served as her faithful caretaker for the last six years of her life.
Verna Eaglin-Blue is preceded in death by, most notably her parents, Johnnie V. Harrison, Sr. and Elma Lee Mosley, and her first husband, John C. Eaglin, Sr. She is survived by her second husband, James Blue, her siblings, Johnnie V. Harrison, Jr., James Harrison, and Elma Lou Myles, her four children (John Jr., Matt, Adrian, and Rebecca), two daughters in law (Kasey Gillespie Eaglin and Tiffany Benfield Eaglin), five grandchildren (Alexis Eaglin, Bailee Eaglin, Kenzie Eaglin, Shawn Eaglin, and Parker Eaglin), scores of nieces, nephews, in-laws, and many members of her extended Church Family over the years from Liberty Road Church of God, Dominion Christian Centre, and United Covenant of Hope Church of God. Verna Eaglin-Blue will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her, but her legacy will live on through her family.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 3 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home, 12555 South Kirkwood Road in Stafford, immediately followed by a funeral service at 12:00 p.m.
