

He was born in Sheboygan, WI on April 11, 1938. He graduated from Sheboygan Falls High School. He entered the US Navy in 1955 and served for 27 years. Alan’s duty stations included Pensacola, FL., Alameda, CA., and Virginia Beach, VA. During his tour of duty, he served aboard the USS Ranger, USS Coral Sea, and the USS Enterprise during the Vietnam War. While in the Navy he obtained his bachelor’s degree from Upper Iowa University. After retiring from the US Navy, Alan continued working as a government contractor.
Alan was very active in coaching youth sports. He worked as an umpire at the high school and college levels. Additionally he enjoyed golf, bowling, and watching his beloved Green Bay Packers.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Doris(Dulmes) Smith; Three children, Scott Smith (Sara), Terence Smith (Robyn), and Elizabeth Karnes; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two brothers, Craig Smith (Wanda) and Bruce Smith; sister, Debbie Clarkson (Rollie); and sister-in-law, Mary Dulmes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Ruth Smith.
A service will be held on Monday, March 30 at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Service, Stafford located at 186 Shelton Shop Rd., Stafford, VA 22554 at 6:00 pm, with the family receiving friends an hour prior to the service. A reception to celebrate Alan’s life will follow. He will be interred at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association National Capital Area Chapter or to Capital Caring Hospice & Palliative Care.
