

Cheryl G. Shaner, age 68, of Fredericksburg, VA passed away Friday, December 11, 2020 at Mary Washington Hospital. She was born on February 15, 1952 in Fredericksburg, VA the daughter of (the late Willie) and Audrey (Comer) Grove of Somerville, VA. She was a Data Analyst for EG&G. Her husband, Richard A Shaner preceded her in death. Survivors include her son, Chet Copperthite and wife Jennifer of Owens Cross Roads, AL; one sister, Denise Davis and husband Mike of Fredericksburg, VA; one brother, Eric Grove and wife Debbie of Somerville, VA; two grandchildren, Andrew and Alex Copperthite; and several beloved nieces and nephews. Services will be held at a later date.
Cheryl was an avid sports fan. During her time in Manassas, VA she was the captain of her mixed league bowling team, the EG&G Scrambled Eggs. Cheryl especially loved baseball and softball. She enjoyed watching all levels of baseball from her grandsons’ tee ball games to the Washington Nationals. Even though she wasn’t a softball player herself, she found other ways to get involved in her favorite sport. Cheryl spent many years as the coach of the EG&G co-ed softball team, and eventually was elevated to become the commissioner of the Prince William County Co-ed Softball League.
Cheryl was a very compassionate and loving person who cared deeply for her family and friends and will be greatly missed.
