Our brother, friend and comrade, David Darrow Skewes, 62, of Bowie Maryland, formerly of Waterford, CT, passed away on April 29, 2019.

Dave was preceded in death by the love of his life, Patricia Howzdy Skewes, his parents, Robert E. and Elaine H. Skewes, and his father-in-law, William Howzdy.

Dave is lovingly survived by mother-in-law, Dorothy Fairbank Howzdy, his brother Robert and wife Diane Skewes, brother Edward Skewes, sister Mary Skewes Kwasniewski, and eight nephews and nieces, Danielle, Kyle, Kevin, Stephanie, Erika, Mary Elaine, Joseph, and John. Dave is also survived by many cousins and a very large contingent of Coast Guard friends and Academy classmates, which he considered family.

Dave was born in New London, Connecticut on July 26, 1956. After attending Waterford High School, he graduated from the U. S. Coast Guard Academy, and remained a proud member of the Class of 1979. While at the Academy, he earned All American status in gymnastics on the pommel horse, and was inducted into the Academy Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. He would also receive a Masters Degree in Total Quality from Anna Maria College. David served his country faithfully with 26 years in the Coast Guard, rising to the rank of Commander. After retiring in 2004 he served an additional 15 years as a management and program analyst for the Coast Guard.

Dave was a man of many talents, a Mr. Fix It guy, who generously gave his time and skills to help others with projects. Dave, we will miss you, your sly smile, your kindness, and your love. Fly high Hoss.

A service will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at 11:00 am at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 161 Embrey Mill Road, Stafford, VA, with a reception to follow at the Church. Dave will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery later this year.

Dear Skewes Family,
My sincere condolences to you all on your loss. I knew Dave at CG Headquarters and he always had a smile to share, no matter when or where we crossed paths! May faith and fond memories sustain you all. Please know that you'll be in my thoughts and prayers.

I have known Dave since his cadet days as a student. Our paths crossed many times over the years and every occasion was a happy time. Dave's smile was always infectious and brightened the room. I was saddened to learn of his passing and I know he will be missed by everyone with whom he came in contact. He left us too soon!

Dave, my friend, you will be greatly missed. I'll miss our conversations on things we considered nonsense and how we laughed about it, then went about fixing it. Know that I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

I am so very saddened to learn of the loss of one of my best Coast Guard friends. Dave and I first met in 1989 in New Haven, CT at GRU/MSO Long Isl Sound. We quickly bonded as colleagues and soon thereafter as real friends. Patty & Dave and Mary Lou & I frequently met for a weekend dinner somewhere along the CT shoreline or at our home in Killingworth. While working colleagues for only 3 years there in New Haven, as we went our separate ways in our CG careers I always considered him one of my closest friends. After both retiring to civilian careers, I often would stop in to CG HQs when in DC on corporate business and would always first look up Patty & Dave to visit. I last saw both probably over 11 years ago... but it seems only yesterday :(. While briefly together long ago I do dearly miss him. Mary Lou & I pass along our sincerest condolences to Dave's family. Sail on my friend.

Although we hadn't seen one another for many years, I have fond childhood memories of hanging out with David, Edward, Robert and Mary at our Connecticut family gatherings.
Rest in Peace, Dear Cousin.
