Born in 1941 to parents Florencio Gemillan and Carmen Esconde in the Philippines, from a young age she admittedly ‘marched to the beat of her own drum.’ Young Flora questioned everything, spoke up when she ‘wasn’t supposed to’, and always looked out for others. And even though food was scarce at times while growing up, Flora never hesitated to share what she had with those who didn’t. The trait of ‘trying to feed everyone all the time’ stayed with her until the end.
As an active member of the local bingo scene, Flora split her playing time between VFW Post 1503 Dale City and Fredericksburg Eagles 4123. Those in the bingo community that knew Flora loved her, and when she won a game, she could be found handing out balato (luck money) to her extended bingo family.
She is survived by sons John (Diane) Thibodeau of Roscoe, IL, Ed (Cathy) Thibodeau of Stafford, VA, Larry (Tracey) Thibodeau of Stafford, VA, Michael George of Stafford, VA, grandchildren Nik, Alyssa, Colin, Gavin, Jacob, Katelyn, and Gabrielle, and 5 beloved cats and 2 birds. She is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Ronald E. Thibodeau, and youngest son Alan R. Thibodeau.
Flora was strong, surviving breast cancer and a stroke, in addition to many other health issues, and the death of her youngest son. She loved her boys, pets, friends, and playing bingo – not necessarily in that order. And even though we will miss her beyond measure, we are glad that she has been reunited with Alan and Pop.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 am on April 12, 2024, at Quantico National Cemetery, 18424 Joplin Rd, Triangle, VA 22172. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation in Flora’s name to one of the following: Capital Caring Health (https://capitalcaring.org), VFW Post 1503 Dale City (https://vfw1503.org), Fredericksburg Eagles #4123 (http://www.fredericksburgaerie4123.com), or any charity related to animal rescue or care.
We love you so much, Mom.
