

George Albert “Smitty” Smith, 89, of Stafford, Virginia, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026. Born on October 2, 1936, in Alexandria, Virginia, he lived a life marked by service, devotion, and generosity. Throughout his years, Smitty was known for his steadfast work ethic, his love of the outdoors, and his unwavering commitment to family, friends, and community.
Smitty proudly served his country aboard the USS Lexington during the Korean War, an experience that shaped his character and deepened his appreciation for discipline, comradeship, and duty. After returning home, he built a long and respected career as a welder and diesel mechanic. His craftsmanship was meticulous, and his willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need was well known.
Beyond his professional life, Smitty had a zest for living that drew others to him. He found peace and joy in camping, hunting, and fishing, often sharing these pursuits with loved ones. He also enjoyed bowling, motorcycle riding, and horseback riding, savoring the freedom and companionship they offered. A devoted volunteer, he gave countless hours to Rockhill Fire and Rescue and to the Travelers Protective Association, believing deeply in the importance of service to others.
Smitty’s door was always open, and his coffee pot was always on. Friends and family fondly recall his habit of stopping by for a visit, ready to share a warm smile, a good story, and a helping hand. His generosity was not limited to grand gestures but found its truest expression in the simple, everyday kindness he extended to everyone he met.
He was a faithful member of Rockhill Baptist Church, where his quiet strength and devotion to God were evident in all he did. His faith guided his life and gave him comfort and purpose.
Smitty was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bonita G. Smith; his parents, David W. and Margaret I. Smith; brothers Stanley, Lewis, John, and David Smith; sisters Mary Shivers, Pearl Fisher, Gladys Wilson, Loretta Stephans, and Doris Stephens; and his children, Wayne Nelson and Theresa Nelson.
He is survived by his daughters, Valerie Komrowski (John) and Renae Smith; his sisters, Jeannie Wilson, Helen Ritenour, and Brenda Davidson; grandchildren Ronnie Smith, Carl Tarrance, Candyce Sawyer, Samantha Miller, and Chad Miller; and great-grandchildren Celia Becerras, Freya Smith, Braelynne Tarrance, Gabriel Sawyer, Josephine Sawyer, and Huxson Miller. His legacy continues through each of them, in their laughter, their kindness, and their dedication to family.
A funeral service celebrating Smitty’s life will be held at Rockhill Baptist Church in Stafford, Virginia, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family invites friends to gather beforehand to share memories and honor a life lived with integrity, faith, and love.
Those who knew Smitty will remember him as a man of great heart, unwavering loyalty, and quiet faith. His presence will be deeply missed, yet his example will continue to inspire all who were blessed to have known him.
Visitation will be held at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, 186 Shelton Shop Rd, Stafford, Virginia 22554, on March 5, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
A Celebration of Life will take place at Rockhill Baptist Church, 12 Van Horn Ln., Stafford, Virginia 22556, on March 6, 2026, at 10:00 am.
Burial will be at Stafford Memorial Park, 154 Shelton Shop Road, Stafford, Virginia, on March 6, 2026.
