Madelyn Kay Gotschall Latham, age 81, of Stafford, VA, Union Mills, NC, Lake Jackson, TX, Baton Rouge, LA and Lake City, SC, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2026, with her loving husband and family by her side.
Born in Kingstree, South Carolina, Kay grew up in nearby Lake City. She went on to attend the Medical University of South Carolina, graduating in 1966 as a Registered Nurse—a career that perfectly matched her innate desire to care for others. While living in Charleston, she met the love of her life, John Latham. The two were wed and recently celebrated their milestone 60th wedding anniversary.
Kay loved to cook, laugh, and take care of everyone around her. She made everyone feel welcome, carrying a beautiful laugh and a radiant smile that could light up any room. She had a deep passion for food and cooking, ensuring that no one ever went hungry under her roof. She was truly her happiest when she was in the kitchen, cooking, entertaining, and filling the hearts and stomachs of her beloved family and friends.
To be in the presence of Kay was to feel completely loved. For decades, that love was felt through her hands as a Registered Nurse, but retirement opened up a beautiful new chapter. Picking up a paintbrush and following in her father’s footsteps, Kay discovered a deep passion for art. She poured the same warmth, joy, and care into her paintings that she had always given to her patients and family, leaving behind a beautiful visual legacy of her talent.
Kay is survived by her devoted husband, John Latham, and her three daughters, Hillary Latham (Todd Miller), Hallie Graves (Robert Graves), and Mariana Latham (Majd Asaad). She also leaves behind her three cherished grandchildren through Hallie: Thomas, Madelyn, and Lily, who brought her immense joy.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 24 with visitation beginning at 1:00PM with a service to follow at 2:00PM at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, 186 Shelton Shop Rd, Stafford, VA 22554.
The Latham Family will be having a celebration of life at a later date.
