Ladislau Kovacs, 74, passed away peacefully on September 29th in his home in Goldvein, Virginia. Known as “Les†by his friends and “Lotzi†by his family, he was born in Brasov, Romania in July of 1938. During the war Les and his family fled to Germany and then later immigrated to America in the late 1950's. Les served in the Air Force in Hawaii where he met and married Mary Ann Fried, who preceded him in death in 2002. Les and Mary moved to Maryland to be closer to his family and then to Virginia to raise their four children. Les was affectionately known by all his friends and family for his sense of humor and outgoing nature. A hard worker, Les retired from three different professions! He spent his retirement serving his community as a volunteer at Mary Washington Hospital and took great pride in the assistance he gave. He often commented that it was such a great feeling to be able to put someone who was facing something difficult at ease by telling them silly jokes and letting them know that “he really ran the placeâ€. Les made lasting and wonderful relationships while working with the Mary Washington Auxiliary – his friends and co-workers meant a great deal to him. Besides working at Mary Washington, Les enjoyed traveling and had a wonderful social life, he was happy to finally travel back to his birthplace and rediscover his heritage. Les will be greatly missed by all.
Les is preceded in death by two brothers, Peter Kovacs and Eugene Kovacs, one sister Claire Kovacs Palmai and his parents, Eugen Kovacs and Helen Neumann Kovacs.
He is survived by two sisters, Gabi Pederson of Denmark and Anna Kovacs of Maryland. He is also survived by his four children, Peter, Christine, Heidi and Kimberly and his seven grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jacob, Steven, Nicholas, Alexis, Bailey and Zoe.
