Obituary of Lisa McMahon
Lisa Hudson McMahon, age 51, of Stafford, Va. died peacefully at home on Thursday, March 26, surrounded by her loving husband, family, and close friends. She was born on November 21, 1968 in Fredericksburg, Virginia and was a 1987 graduate of Stafford Senior High School. On April 22, 2006, she married the love of her life, George McMahon. Lisa had an impressive career in law enforcement that spanned over 30 years. She worked at the Stafford Co. Sheriff’s Office as a Communications Officer, and was the first female Police Officer in the Town of Orange. Later, she transferred to Mary Washington College (now UMW), where she rose to the rank of Shift Commander (Sgt.). Lisa was then hired as Communications Manager for the City of Fredericksburg’s 911 Center, where she worked until her retirement in 2019. Her other career highlights include teaching at the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy (Basic School, Communication’s, NCIC/VCIN, Driving, Defensive Tactics, and RAD classes). Lisa was a skilled, trained hostage/crisis negotiator. She taught with the FBI’s Crisis (Hostage) Negotiation Program. After retiring from Fredericksburg’s 911 Center, Lisa briefly worked for the US Marines Corps as a Communications Officer at the Marine Corps Base Quantico’s 911 Center before an unexpected colon cancer diagnosis in early March 2020. Lisa is survived by her devoted husband of almost 14 years, George McMahon; mother, Marsha Hudson; father, John Edwards; sister Debra Miller; brother Matt Hudson; cousin Vanessa Collier-Weglian; step-sisters Becky Edwards and Jenny Russell, stepbrother John Edwards Jr., as well as 15 nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her caring mother-in-law, Nancy McMahon; sister-in-law, Maura McMahon Rickman (Mike Rickman), and three brothers-in-law—Thomas J. McMahon (Jenny McMahon), and Brendan McMahon (Lisa Helsel McMahon), and Terrance McMahon. She also leaves behind her best friend Dawn Kerns who, along with Kim Hood, became her caregivers to the end. Her grandparents, Ethel and William B. Wills, preceded her in death. Tenacious, feisty, funny, giving, warm, loving, sympathetic, empathetic, compassionate, commanding, and electrifying, Lisa epitomized grit and grace. She always put the needs of others before her own. She loved animals, and was the best Mama to her dogs. She was also talented beyond belief—an amazing cook and baker, floral designer, quilter, and crafter. Lisa will always be remembered for her generous and selfless spirit, her infectious laugh, and quick-witted humor. She will be missed by so many, and her incomparable spirit will live on in all those lives she touched. Family and friends will be invited to a celebration of Lisa’s life in the future.
