He was raised in Maine and New Orleans, where he joined the U.S. Navy. After 20 years of service—mostly onshore, with only 3 days of sea duty—Paul retired as an Aviation Electrician's Mate (E-6).
He then became employee #35 at a small online service that later evolved into America Online (AOL). In 1988, he met Roberta, the love of his life, through AOL; they married in 1991, becoming the second couple to meet and marry via online dating. After several years at AOL, the couple retired to travel and pursue their interests. They started geocaching and have found over 9500 caches, forming many friendships within the geocaching community nationwide.
Recently, Paul also enjoyed building Lego models, especially planes and nautical themes. In 2025, he was diagnosed with liver cancer and began aggressive treatment. On February 16, he peacefully passed away in his sleep. He leaves behind his wife, Roberta, and stepson, Lee Sarfati.
