
Scott leaves his wife of 63 years, Frances (Savage) Somers; his daughter, Donna Fish and her husband Kevin of Woodbridge, VA; his son, Patrick Somers of Springfield, VA; his son John Somers and his wife Susan of Littleton, CO.; his daughter Kathy Somers of Westlake Village, CA.; his son Michael Somers and his wife Caroline of Stafford, VA; nine grandchildren, Erin, Kristin, Kat, Lindsey, Hannah, Kerri, Sean, Francesca and Juliana; and two great-grandchildren, Landon and namesake Scott.
Scott, son of Scott Sylvester Somers and Margaret (Laughlin) Somers, was born and raised in Clairton, PA. Scott volunteered for service during WWII reaching the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army’s Air Corps. Scott was a B-17 Flying Fortress Captain, serving in the 305th “Can Do” bombardment group in RAF Chelveston, England where he earned the EAME Theatre Ribbon w/ 2 Stars, the Air Medal w/ 5 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After completing his service, Scott attended Carnegie Mellon Institute of Technology earning a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. After graduation, Scott and his wife Frances married in her hometown of Toledo, OH., subsequently moving more than a dozen times while they raised a family of five and Scott embarked on his career in manufacturing while retaining a passion for flying, gaining recreational licensing in many aircraft. The majority of Scott’s professional career was spent working for Corning Glass Works, with his most rewarding position that of Main Plant manager for more than a decade at CGW’s headquarters in Corning, NY. After retirement Scott spent much of his time designing and building beautiful furniture, serving as a member of Aquia Harbour’s Architectural Review Board, fishing on Aquia Creek and attending his grandchildren’s dance recitals and sporting events while still retaining his first true love of flying, piloting recreational aircraft then designing, building and flying RC aircraft later in life as a member of the Fredericksburg Aeromasters club.
The bravery Scott displayed as a young man was only outdone by the living example he provided to all of hard work and dedication to family.
The family will be receiving friends from 11am to 12pm on Monday, November 7th at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Home in Stafford with a memorial service immediately following. Internment is private.
