Born on June 16, 1940, in Mt. Vernon, Maine, Steve was the son of Kenneth and Arlene (Reckards) Jacobs. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Nancy; his loving wife, Kathie; and his son, Robert.
He is survived by his sisters, Judith and Beverly; his brother, Merton; his children, Stephen (Erin), Kenneth (Michalina), and Elizabeth (Rod); ten grandchildren; and many dear friends who will miss him deeply.
Steve dedicated over forty years of his career to the United States Military Academy Preparatory School, where he led the English Department with quiet excellence, integrity, and respect for his students and colleagues. His service took him to both Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, where his commitment to education left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege to work with him.
A man of few words but great depth, Steve was steady and dependable, often expressing care through action rather than words. He valued honesty, hard work, and a sense of responsibility, qualities that shaped both his family and his students.
He enjoyed working in the yard for as long as his health allowed and found both joy and frustration on the golf course, where his perfectionism made him his own toughest critic. During family gatherings, he preferred to sit back and quietly take in the happy chaos around him; those moments of togetherness brought him great peace.
He will be remembered always for his strength, humility, and the steadfast care he gave in his own quiet way.
A private Mass of Christian Burial and interment will be held in December.
Because James River Hospice provided such comfort and dignity during Steve’s final days, the family would be grateful for donations made in his memory. James River Hospice Foundation, 9100 Arboretum Parkway, Suite 290, Richmond, VA 23236
