She is survived by her daughter, Darlene Yvette Collins; her grandson, Jake Collins; her brothers, Robert Martin Knight Jr., Ralph Michael Knight, and John Patrick Knight, M.D; her sisters, Anne Livingston Knight, and Patricia Louise Knight; several nieces and nephews and her son-in-law Dan Collins.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Martin Knight Sr. and Anne Livingston Knight; her husband, Quentin Harvey Carney; and her sister, Barbara Jane Knight.
She was born on February 1, 1947, in Washington, D.C. and was raised in a devoted loving Catholic family home. Her father, originally from England and later naturalized in the U.S. served in WWII as 2nd Lieutenant in the Pacific Theater. Her mother’s Livingston bloodline is shared to that of Philip Livingston who was known as "The Signer" of The Declaration of Independence and Robert Livingston who helped write both The Declaration of Independence and The U.S. Constitution.
She graduated from Wheaton High School in Maryland and shortly after married in 1968. She performed clerical work at Geico in Alaska while stationed with her husband in the Army where she then began her next journey as a new mother and later returned to live in Maryland. She was a loving stay-at-home mom and homemaker. In the years to come she would move again with her family to Woodbridge, Virginia. She spent those years in retail as a stock clerk and cashier. She had a passion for law and even pursued a job as a dispatcher. She enjoyed fashion, sewing and was beautifully creative in both decorating and jewelry making. Reading was another favorite past-time. Susan also became an excellent dog trainer to her own of whom she loved a great deal. There really wasn't anything this amazing lady could not have accomplished. She always excelled at whatever she chose.
After her husband’s passing in 2011 she would go on to live near her family in Fredericksburg, VA. Although it was from brain disease she suffered later in life, the irony is that it was a noticeably impeccable memory that was one of her greatest traits throughout most of her years.
She was a dancer during the fun times and a fighter through the toughest of times. She could light up any room bringing smiles and always happy to acknowledge anyone she passed with just a simple hello. She will be forever loved and greatly missed.
Susan will be laid to rest at 11:30am on Thursday, December 16, 2021, at Quantico National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
