He is survived by his wife, Francesca Maresca Piper; his son, Jonathan Charles Piper and grandson Alexandar; his daughter, Francesca Piper Koss and granddaughter Thea.
Born on October 11, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, Don was the son of the late Gordon Alvord Piper and Grace Talbott Piper. He attended local primary schools and graduated from Stamford High School in 1953. He went on to graduate from Syracuse University in 1957, where he was a member of Psi Upsilon Fraternity and the Traditions Commission, an upper-class activities honorary.
Don served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1960, including a tour of duty in Korea. He entered the service as an enlisted man and left as a commissioned officer, serving as a photographer and TV production specialist.
In the early 1960s, Mr. Piper worked in New York City as an assistant to several photographers, including the renowned Irving Penn, before joining SSC&B Advertising, now known as Lintas International.
In 1969, he began a 20-year career with the New York corporate offices of Burlington Industries, where he served as a staff advertising and fashion photographer, as well as an audio-visual producer. From 1987 to 1997, he worked as a freelance photographer. In addition to his professional career, Mr. Piper was deeply involved in volunteer work. For several years, he served as Assistant District Commissioner for the Alfred W. Dater Council, Boy Scouts of America.
During retirement, Don remained actively engaged, providing photography and audio-visual services for the Stamford Historical Society, volunteering at the First Congregational Church, and supporting the New Covenant Soup Kitchen in Stamford. He also helped with food services at Camp Chingachgook, a YMCA camp on Lake George that he attended, some 75 years prior as a child.
Don maintained a seasonal residence at the Piper family legacy property on Lake George in New York’s Adirondack Park. He was happiest there—immersed in nature, surrounded by family history, and forever appreciating the natural beauty and sunsets.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lake George Land Conservancy, Bolton Landing, New York.
