Donald Frederick Wade

October 26, 1950April 10, 2014

Donald Frederick Wade passed away on April 10, 2014, at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY, of a heart attack. He was 63. Born in Concord, MA -- a town he would forever think of as his home -- to the late Guy Donald and Florence Wade, he moved to Stamford, CT, in 1984, and lived there for the remainder of his life.

Don was unwavering in his limitless love for his wife, Julia, and children, Ben, Darcy, and Andy, all of whom survive him and miss him terribly. He is also survived by his brother and sister, David and Annie, who cherish his memory. Lastly, he is survived by his constant companion, Oscar the Cat.

Don held dear his childhood memories, including his time spent as a caddy at Concord Country Club, and at Concord High School, where he was a multiple-sport athlete, president of the student body, and voted best dressed for the “Don Wade Fashion Collection.” He went on to receive his BA from the University of Miami, supported by the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund.

Don was a talented writer and editor for a variety of publications, including 17 years at Golf Digest, and the author of more than 30 books, among them the best-selling “And Then Jack Said to Arnie...” series, and the well-reviewed golf espionage thriller, “Take Dead Aim”.

Don will be remembered by many for his great stories, humor, selflessness, and beautiful golf game, which included innumerable rounds at Stanwich Country Club, where he was a member for many years.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Saturday, April 19, at 2 PM at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 2810 Long Ridge Road, Stamford, CT. A wake will be held on Friday, April 18, from 4-8 PM at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford, CT. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Ouimet Fund.

I just read Don's name in the In Memoriam section of Univ. of Miami's Alumni Magazine. I knew Don in college and he was always a bright spot in my memories of UM. Checking out the internet I found this guest book and I can see he was greatly loved throughout his life just as he was at UM. My prayers are with the family.

I am so sorry to hear of Don's passing while watching the RBC Heritage Classic on CBS. Don was my caddy master at Concord CC and not only taught me how to caddy but would always stick up for us when the guy in the kitchen wouldn't serve the caddies and he would have it out with him sticking up for us little guys. A great man even way back then. I always looked up to him and very sorry for your loss.
