

Rosa Edith Mittel passed away on Friday the 10th May in Stamford, Connecticut at the age of 94. Born in Unsleben, Germany on the 23rd of February 1919, she emigrated to the USA via Cuba where she and her family awaited a visa for a year. Having studied millinery in her teens, she eventually opened her own Madison Avenue boutique creating hats of her own designs for an exclusive clientele. She was married to Arthur who predeceased her by many years.
In her fifties, Edith discovered her love for sculpting in stone and went on to become an accomplished artist, winning awards and recognition for her talent. Her works are held in private collections around the world.
Her twilight years were spent in a happy and loving relationship with Herb Ashe, who passed away at 100 years old on April 11th.
Never having had children of her own, Edith is survived and is missed by her nephews, nieces, cousins and their offspring in whose lives she played an active and inspirational role. They include Joni and Lucy Marx, Andrea Marx and Guto Cunha (Joana and Gui), Janine Marx, Joel and Daniela Marx, Gideon and Orna Asher (Alon, Tamar, Amir and Adi), Micki Asher (Shelly, Orli and families), Charlie Mittel and Maryann Scarito, Linda Mittel, David Mittel and Elisabeth Ekelundh-Mittel (Jonathan, Oliver and Daniel), Deborah and Humberto Ribeiro (Marcus and Leila), Lotte Hess, Fred Nauman, Ruth Derison, Greta Oestricher, Alice Schoen and Joe ‘Herbie’ Mittel.
Funeral services will be held at Congregation Agudath Sholom, 301 Strawberry Hill Avenue, Stamford, CT on Monday at 11am. Burial will follow at Beth El Cemetery in Paramus, NJ. Shiva will be observed at her niece Deborah’s home – 453 FDR Drive and Grand St APT C-1402 , New York, NY - on Monday from 3:30pm-9:00pm and Tuesday, from 12:00pm-7:00pm (212) 979 8214.
