Eloise B. Armen (July 20, 1917 – August 8, 2012) died peacefully in her sleep early Wednesday morning, August 8. Eloise recently lost her spouse of over 60 years, Seth A. Armen in January 2012. They were both 95 years old at the time of their death. Eloise is survived by her sons, Christopher Armen and Theodore Armen, her daughter, Rebecca Armen Lyman, her daughter-in-law, Jere Armen, and 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Eloise fell in love with the theatre at an early age and went to New York City to fulfill her dream. She worked with such actresses as Laurette Taylor and Eva LeGallienne, and was in the original Broadway production of Harvey, starring Frank Fay. Set up on a blind date with Seth Armen, by some mutual friends, it was love at first sight. They raised their four children in Massachusetts (including Hartley S. Armen, 1946-1993), with a summer home on Lake Winnipesaukee. Here Eloise continued her work in the theatre becoming a producer at The Gilford Playhouse in Gilford, NH – a star-package summer theatre and hosted such stars as Sylvia Fay, Van Johnson, and Betty Grable. Moving their home to Weston, Connecticut in 1977, Eloise continued her theatre work with Eva LeGallienne, and worked with Lucille Lortell, at the White Barn Theatre in Westport.
Deeply involved in the Weston Library and community, Eloise and Seth had many happy years in Weston, CT before enjoying some city living in Westport. They then moved to Edgehill, a lifecare community in Stamford, CT, where they were one of the pioneer members of the community and extremely active in its opening and early years.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to the Actor’s Fund at www.actorsfund.org.
