Eugenie Phetis would like to let you know that her work on earth is done as of Tuesday, December 22, 2020. She victoriously fought but succumbed to her battle with Alzheimer’s and End-Stage Renal Failure at 4:40pm Tuesday evening. Ms. Eugenie received a call from her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with an offer for an appointment from which she will not be returning. This assignment comes with a huge sign-on bonus and a reunion to be with family and friends that she has not seen in a very long time.
Eugenie Phetis was born in La Gonâve, Haiti on Wednesday, November 29, 1939 to parents Genelia St-Vil and Joseph Phetis. She was the symbol of perfection in her father’s eyes, for she was his one and only child. She loved to tell stories of the precious time she spent with her dad in Jacmel, Haiti. One of her fondest memory is him carrying her on his shoulder around the marketplace to buy sugarcane, his favorite nickname for her “Chine” was because of her strong resemblance to a little China Doll. Her father fell ill and passed away after a long battle with Polio, during the Great Depression. She returned to La Gonâve to be with her mother. Unfortunately, by the age of 10 her mother also passed away, leaving her an orphan. Following her parents’ death, she was sent to live with her mother’s cousin Mr. Samuel St-Vil in Saint-Marc, Haiti. Her mother’s remaining children were scattered throughout La Gonâve to different family members. Ms. Eugenie was very fortunate to be around the missionaries in Saint-Marc. She received her basic school education and became a tutor for the foreign French children. She moved to Petion-Ville, Haiti in the 1960’s where she attended a trade school and graduated as a Seamstress. She spoke French fluently and adapted very well with the culture of high society. She is survived by her son Iegor Phetis of Stamford, CT and Mona Figueroa of Coral Springs, FL. She worked tirelessly as a Seamstress, a Pharmacy Tech and eventually owning her private business selling clothing, jewelry, and accessories. She came to America on January 2, 1982 with the help of her close and dearest friends Frank Celamy and Denise Lucien. She will be remembered as a devout Christian who helped raised several relatives. She was selflessly giving to a flaw, sharing her small apartment with her half-siblings and their children. Her laugh and loud voice was unique and could be heard by all who was around. She enjoyed singing, gardening, great dinner parties, and serving as a Deaconess at Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Church. The lyrics to her favorite song “I Surrender All” is a testament to the life she lived— “all to Jesus, I surrender. All to thee I freely give.”
We send our deepest condolences to her son, Iegor Phetis and his children Ashka Phetis, Joseph Phetis, Keyshaun and Deyshaun Phetis, Elijah Phetis, and Nathaniel Phetis. We send our condolences to her daughter Mona Figueroa and her children Rebekah Estime, Sarah Estime, Miriam Estime, Rachel Estime, Jason Figueroa Jr., and Ramona Figueroa. She is survived by her half-siblings Leone Leger, Jacob Leger, Adelmise Leger, Clement Leger, and Genise Leger. May the peace of God be with so many whose lives she’s touched— Lucien Family, Jasmin Family, Mars Family, Clerge Family, and Bruna Family.
Her new mission takes her to a wonderful place where she will be at peace. She will be socializing, eating delicious food, gardening, and singing out loud to her heart’s content.
