Evelyn Matis of Stamford CT passed away peacefully from natural causes on November 8 2018. Evelyn was born in Hamburg, Germany on January 28th, 1941. She was the daughter of Paula (Shluter) and Karl Fraemke. Ever adventurous, Evelyn emigrated to the United States in 1967 and soon after met Steve. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in December of this year.
Evelyn and Steve had two children (Gregg and Jamie). In early married life, Evelyn was devoted to raising their two children and loved the family skiing trips in winter and summers at the beach in New Jersey.
Her passion was the botanical world. Plants and gardening were very special to her. She looked forward to spring and summer when she could move her 'babies' outdoors. She had an annual struggle to produce the perfect lawn. She filled her home with all variety of greenery and blooms that brought life and happiness to her home. Every year, she looked forward to the annual Orchid show at the NY Botanical Gardens. Orchids had a special place in her heart. She loved animals and doted on a succession of cats that were her pets. She had a morning routine of feeding the birds on the back deck. They anticipated the sliding open of the door leading to the deck and flocked to and around her as she placed several piles of special wild bird seed on the railing.
She loved nature and the outdoors and was an avid traveler who enjoyed trips all over the world. She especially enjoyed living in Belgium for four years in the mid 90's when Steve had an overseas assignment. She was a DYIer who had an ongoing, ambitious, ever-expanding list of projects around the home. She had a special eye for home decoration and was an accomplished amateur interior designer. She enjoyed the opera and the theater. She looked forward to the annual February trip to Sarasota and walks on the beach.
Her grandchildren were an important part of her life and she cherished the time she spent with them.
Evelyn is survived by her husband Steve, her son Gregg and his wife Kelly and their two children Calvin and Julianna, and her daughter Jamie.
Visitation will be held at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford, CT, Friday, November 16 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her memory may be made to Pitter Patter, 23 Mead St. Stamford, CT. www.leopgallagherstamford.com
