Born on June 12, 1929, in Norwalk, Connecticut, George was the son of the late Dr. Frederick A. Patterson and Gertrude L. Patterson. A lifelong learner, George graduated from Norwalk High School with the Class of 1947 before attending Harvard College, where he earned an A.B. in Physics in 1951. He went on to receive his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1955.
Following medical school, George completed his internship at Worcester City Hospital. From 1957 to 1959, he served as captain practicing medicine at the USAF Hospital in Izmir, Turkey. Upon return, he began his residency at SUNY Upstate Medical Center and in 1963 returned to Norwalk, where he joined his father, Fred, in medical practice, embarking on a distinguished career in obstetrics and gynecology that would span more than five decades.
For 32 years, Dr. Patterson practiced at Norwalk Hospital and in private practice, delivering thousands of babies and caring for generations of families throughout Fairfield County. His commitment to patient care and medical excellence later led him to St. Vincent’s Medical Center, where he served as House Physician of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1995 until his retirement in 2009.
In 1956, George married Dorothy M. Falk, with whom he shared 68 years of marriage until her passing in 2024. In retirement, George and Dorothy spent much of their time enjoying the beauty and tranquility of Cape Cod, a place that held special meaning in their lives.
Music was a lifelong joy for George. He grew up playing piano and violin and never lost his love for classical music and musicals, knowing his beloved Gilbert and Sullivan by heart. He liked to play his favorites at full volume, snapping his fingers or conducting an invisible orchestra. As his family fondly recalls, he was something of a frustrated conductor.
Outside of medicine, George enjoyed several lifelong interests. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, a longtime Star Trek enthusiast, and a devoted boater who always looked forward to getting out on the water.
George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy; his parents, Frederick and Gertrude Patterson; and his brothers, Quentin and Ted Patterson. He is survived by his sister, Linda Patterson; his three children, James Patterson (Donna), Richard Patterson (Dana), and Marcia Patterson (Tim Meehan); his seven grandchildren, Brandon May (Julie), Keith Patterson (Kristen), Bryant Patterson, Ben Patterson, Quinn Meehan, Sean Meehan, and Hunter Patterson; and his great-grandson, Jasper May. He also leaves behind many extended family members, friends, former colleagues, and grateful patients whose lives he touched over the years.
Those who knew Alban will remember his intellect, dedication to medicine, quiet wit, and steadfast commitment to his patients and family. His life was one of service, curiosity, and accomplishment, and his legacy will continue through the generations that follow him. Funeral services will be announced at a later date and will be limited to immediate family and close friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an animal rescue organization of your choice, in honor of the Dalmatians that brought George and Dorothy so much joy.
He truly “Lived Long and Prospered”
