Horty was born in New York, NY on April 11, 1915 to the late Maria and Pasquale Baffa. The oldest of 6 children, Horty led a life devoted to the service of others. She fiercely cared for her family members and dedicated her life to a 47 year career as Executive Director, and later as President, of Catholic Big Sisters in New York City. Additionally, she served as an Almoner for The Havens Relief Fund Society of New York City, helping to provide emergency relief funds to those in need. Horty positively changed the lives of each person she met and helped countless families over the course of her career.
Horty was admired, respected, and loved by all who knew her. She was known for her devotion to family and friends, her generous heart, her booming laugh, her talent for organzing and, most notably, her iron will. In more recent years, she achieved a personal goal in researching and completing a family geneology album, dating back to 1700 and in doing so, reunited and introduced family members from all over the world with our family here in the United States. Horty is survived by her youngest brother, Alfred Baffa and his wife, Gemma, along with 9 of her 12 beloved nieces and nephews, to include Robert Castrignano and Theresa Cribbin, both of Stamford. She was “Aunt Horty” to an additional 26 great nieces and nephews and another 19 (and counting) great, great nieces and nephews- all of whom adored her for choosing to play an active part in their lives. Words cannot express how sorely she will be missed.
The family will receive visitors at Gallagher Funeral Home on Monday, June 4 from 2-5pm and 7-9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Gabriel Church on Tuesday at 10am . In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lymphoma Foundation.
